The Sociology program is a part of the Department of Social Sciences and offers three distinct areas of concentration: General Sociology, Criminology, and Social Psychology. The department prides itself on preparing its majors for wherever their career paths take them, whether it is jobs in the community, the justice system, the government, social work, or continuing their education with graduate or law school. With approximately 100 majors, sociology is one of the most popular majors on campus. Our faculty have a variety of research interests including, aging, health, globalization, deviance, crime, and social movements.

The goals of the Sociology program are to:

  • Provide students with an understanding of the origin and evolution of human society and the form, institutions, and functions of groups and how these structures change
  • Instill into students a comprehension of analytical and statistical skills and techniques
  • Provide students with functional areas of specialization which broaden career options of those graduate studies
  • Examine and analyze issues and concerns pertaining to race relations in an effort to promote better relations among racial and ethnic groups.
