The Office of Public Relations is equipped with several tools to effectively communicate Paine College news to internal and external audiences. The staff in the Office of Public Relations are the connection between the campus community and the media, therefore offering the following services.

Press Releases

Press releases are for the purpose of alerting media about Paine College, offering new services and public events that may make it to print or broadcast. All events may not be deemed “newsworthy”; however the staff in the Office of Public Relations will assist you in reaching the goals for publicizing positive activities on campus.

What is newsworthy?
Stories which happen near to us or stories that a number of people will be affected by have more significance.

  • Research findings: The media is most interested in your research breakthroughs if it will impact or interest the general public.
  • Major announcements: If a faculty member or student has received an important award, or if your department has acquired a significant gift or grant
  • Well-known or famous campus visitors: Let us know if a famous or well known person will be involved in any campus event.
  • Events: All events that meet newsworthy status can be great for coverage. If you believe your event meets the criteria let us know and we will attempt to get the coverage you will need.
  • Human interest stories: These are stories about a person who has done an extraordinary thing (e.g. A 95 year old college freshman or a set of septuplets attending the same school). Human interest stories are not limited to these examples, but any stories submitted will be properly marketed to the proper media outlet.

Publications

The Paineite
is the student newspaper published once a month. The newspaper features several articles that keep the Paine College student body abreast of news on campus and in the community.

Paine College Magazine is published bi annually. The magazine features articles about alumni, faculty, staff, campus news and several other features of interest to the Paine College community. Newsletters are published based on the departments they come from.

Newsletters are a great way to address your internal news and events for intercampus circulation.

Photography

The Office of Public Relations uses staff, student and professional photographers for all news and publication needs. We also keep pictures on file. Photographers should be called only when it is deemed that the Public Relations staff is not able to take the photographs. Request for the use of an outside photographer must be approved at least one month in advance of any event. Requesting divisions are responsible for charges for using an outside photographer.

Press Conferences

Press conferences are called only when a major announcement is to be made to several journalists at once or when a prominent campus visitor attracts more media interest than his or her schedule will allow. The feasibility, timing, announcement and coordination of news conferences should be discussed with the Office of Public Relations as soon as you are aware of the event. Generally, a staff member of the Office of Public Relations will handle arrangements, greet reporters and preside at the conference.

Other Services

"Paine Talk, Plain Talk" is a one-hour campus broadcast that features students, faculty and staff discussing topics that affect the Paine College and Augusta community. This show is a product of the Office of Public Relations, but operated by students. The Office of Public Relations can also assist the campus in editing, writing, and publication production. Publications include brochures, pamphlets or any printed material that will be used for distribution to the prospective students and/or visitors. We also help other offices and/ or divisions by recommending printers and publication designs.
