Presented by The Paine College Museum Initiative

Nancy Wellington Bookhart, assistant professor of Art at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, and director of The Paine College Museum Initiative is excited about the opportunity to participate in an annual event in Augusta, Georgia, The Westobou Festival, which is rapidly becoming an art mega fest. This year, Paine College will host three events in conjunction with the festival: The Nina Simone Experience, which is a traveling arts exhibition created by the estate of Dr. Nina Simone, and two accompanying events. The events will take place September 16-24, 2010, on the campus of Paine College.

The Estate of Dr. Nina Simone has created a special arts experience titled The Nina Simone Experience: A Tribute to Dr. Nina Simone, High Priestess of Soul. The Experience celebrates Simone’s cultural footprint through the arts. Paine College will feature an epic stage production with a 100 voice choir, and a thirty piece orchestra, a visual arts exhibition featuring regional and national artists, interpreting the life and legacy of Simone, and a scholarly symposium, where professors and students will deliver riveting speeches on Simone’s contribution to the American Landscape—her music as social commentary.
