Gary F. Flanigan

Media Studies Department Chair and Associate Professor Gary F. Flanigan is a University of Kansas graduate with a BA in African Studies and Psychology, along with an MS in Radio/Television-Film journalism. He also holds a PhD in Communications/media conferred by Pacific Western University, Los Angeles. Previously, Dr. Flanigan was director for Supportive Educational Services and assistant director for Minority Affairs at the University of Kansas; executive producer and program director for CAU-TV at Clark Atlanta University; assistant dean for academic support and adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta; and he was formerly associated with North Carolina A&T State University, Grambling State University, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as both assistant professor and director for their respective radio/TV broadcast facilities. Aside from academia, Dr. Flanigan is a principal executive in the operation of WVVQ-TV, Jacksonville, FL; best-selling book author (111: The Media War Between Jesus Christ and Satan); and motion picture film screenwriter/producer with Creative Entertainment & Media, Inc, Marina del Rey, California.

Tracey Council

Assistant Professor  |  Department of Media Studies

Media Studies Department- Assistant Professor of Television Broadcast and Film, Tracey V. Council is a Regent University graduate with a M.A. Communications degree in Film and Television. She also has a Ph.D. in Communications from Regent University of Virginia Beach, VA; with an emphasis in entertainment affects in society. Her dissertation included grounded research in the area of music video effects on black women utilizing visual performance ethnography. Previously, Dr. Council has spent time as a full-time adjunct at Norfolk State University in the departments of Mass Communication and English and Foreign Languages. While at NSU she worked on course development committees and was a faculty contributor to the Oral Competency Language Assessment for the state of Virginia; as well as, the co-developer of the on-line speech course. Dr. Council has also taught at Hampton University and Tidewater Community College as a communication adjunct. Her production and performance work has spanned the east coast over the last 15 years including: New Dominion Pictures, BET, CBN, Youth Entertainment Studios Tra-Val Productions, Morgan Writers Inc. and NASA Langley.

Arlecia Simmons

Assistant Professor of Media Studies  |  Department of Media Studies

Dr. Arlecia D. Simmons joined the Paine faculty in August 2012. She teaches journalism and public relations courses. She holds a BA in Mass Communications from Winthrop University, an MA in Journalism from the University of South Carolina, a PhD in Mass Communications from the University of Iowa, and an MDiv from Duke University Divinity School. Simmons has previously taught journalism at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Claflin University, and the University of Iowa. She was a features writer at daily newspapers, and has worked as the university relations officer at Charleston Southern University. Her research interests focus on the intersection of media and religion and the cultural history of marginalized communities as captured by print media.
