(AUGUSTA, GA)-- Dr. Sardar Yousufzai, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Physics & Environmental Sciences offered a free six-week chemistry course for middle and high students which will conclude on July 18, 2013.
Carmen Williams, mother of Jada Williams a rising freshman at Richmond Academy within their IB program, heard about the program through a friend. “I wanted to get my daughter keep her busy and I decided to attend as well. I would like to have her involved in the program next year”.
“This class has really helped me with the periodic table and different areas of science,” said Jada.
Another parent, Maggie Talbert of North Augusta, South Carolina and her son Moses are both first year participants of the program. “It has been very exciting and I am enjoying it,” said Moses, who will be a freshman at Fox Creek High School in the fall. His mother, Maggie, explained that she will be able to assist her son with his course work with the help of this program that has “refreshed” her understanding of chemistry.
The free six-week, one -hour course covered the basic concept of Chemistry through instruction and demonstration. The course’s primary goal was to prepare students with basic knowledge for science courses. The course took place on the Paine College campus in Haygood Holsey Hall. Students met Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
“It is something I wanted to do in order to help youth prepare for chemistry in middle and high school,” Yousufzai said. “I have been holding this free Summer Chemistry course for six years. I have 63 students this year.”
The professor utilizes the assistance of two volunteers, Michael Nora and Jerome Brown of Thomson, Georgia. Brown attends Georgia College and State University and majors in Middle Grades education. Nora is from Aiken, South Carolina and attends University of South Carolina to study Pre-Pharmacy.
Yousufzai’s program is funded by a small fee per family for students to participate. At the end of the program, the students receive awards and a shirt upon their successful completion of the course.
Yousufzai’s educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (1967; Agra University India), a Master’s of Science in Microbiology (major) and Organic Chemistry (minor) in 1971 (Panthnagar University, India), a Masters of Philosophy in Biochemistry (1975; Aligarh University, India) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1978; Aligar University, India).
His research experience includes serving as a Post-Doctoral Fellow (Department of Physiology and Department of Nutrition, University of Wisconsin, 1978-1982), a Research Assistant Scientist (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical College of Georgia, 1982-1990), and an Assistant Professor (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical College of Georgia, 1991-2000).
