Augusta, GA--Over 150 student-athletes comprising of 10 teams at Paine College work tirelessly to achieve their goals, both on the field of play and in the classroom. They thrive off the support from their coaches, teammates, families, friends and fans. Now, they will have additional help through the establishment of the Lion Athletic Club.

On August 2, 2011, the fundraising arm of Paine College Athletics officially launched the Lion Athletic Club in a move that would create additional funds to support student athletes.
In a show of solidarity, Director of Athletics Tim Duncan and the entire Paine College Athletics staff made donations or pledges to the Lion Athletic Club and became its first members. “While developing the Lion Athletic Club, our coaches and staff wanted to be a part of this historic moment in Paine College Athletics,” Duncan said.  ‘It is a testament to our student-athletes, that 100% of the athletics staff wanted to participate in this vision.”

Currently, Paine College funds 44% of the NCAA Division II maximum allowable scholarships for the 10 sports it sponsors.  While that is up from the 34% funded in 2010-2011, Lion coaches are still at a recruiting disadvantage as compared to other Division II colleges and universities.

“Paine College Athletics’ greatest need is scholarship money for student-athletes” stated Duncan.  “For years, our coaches and student-athletes have competed with the heart and determination of Lions, only to realize deep inside that we are outmatched due to a lack of resources. Through donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, the college will be able to increase the amount of scholarships awarded to student-athletes.”

“Before we asked for one donation out in the community, we wanted to show our commitment by becoming the Lion Athletic Club’s first members” stated Selina Kohn, Associate Athletics Director and Head Volleyball Coach.  “Now that each member of our department has joined, we hope our alumni, former student-athletes, season ticket holders, and the Augusta community will get behind the effort to provide more opportunities for Paine College student-athletes”

Lion Athletic Club membership levels range from contributions as little as $50 up to $10,000 annually.  Each membership level has corresponding benefits, which include invitations to special events, complimentary Paine College Lion Athletic Club gifts, and traveling to games with teams.
