Tuscaloosa, AL- Senior Alice Holmes had misplaced her shot for a couple of games, including a game against her previous school, Tuskegee University, but she found it tonight,February 10, 2011 as the Lady Lions finally ended an eleven game losing streak.

The Lady Lions led a good portion of the contest, except for a brief period in the first half, when the Lady Tigers led by three points, but the Lady Lions were able to go into the locker room with a 23-20 lead.   The Lady Tigers also grabbed the lead 53-50 with 2:03 left in the second half of the game.

Senior Alice Holmes cocked her gun, and fired two shots: sophomore Antionette McPhail grabbed the rebound on the first shot, but a turnover by the Lady Lions put the ball back into Stillman’s court.  A foul by Shanee’ Butler, let the Lady Tigers keep the ball, but they missed from the charity stripe, and Lady Lion Brittany Pevey came up with the rebound.

The ball was once again in the hands of Alice Holmes, who missed a layup,  and Stillman got the rebound, but Stillman turned the ball over again. The Lady Lions took advantage, and called a timeout.  Shanee’ Butler got Holmes the ball, and she fired and connected on a three pointer to tie the game with 43 seconds remaining.

Stillman wouldn’t be outdone, and Phyllice Eubanks somehow connected on a layup, to put the Lady Tigers up by two points.  Of course the ball is in Holmes’ hands at this point, but she missed, and sophomore Jasmine Faulkner grabbed the rebound with   21 seconds remaining.  The Lions worked the clock, and Faulkner connected on a three pointer with six seconds remaining, assisted by senior Shanee’ Butler, to give the Lady Lions a one point lead, and that was all she wrote in the 56-55 victory over the Lady Tigers.

Alice Holmes finished the game with 18 points, followed by freshman Baiesha Johnson with nine points, sophomore Jasmine Faulkner seven points, and Junior Brittany Pevey finished with six points.  Sophomore Michele Brown also finished the game with six points and eight rebounds to go along with four assist by Senior Shanee’ Butler.

With the win, the Lady Lions improve to 2-19 overall and 2-16 SIAC conference.

The Lady Lions will be back in action, Saturday, February 12, 2011 as they host Morris College for the Paine College homecoming game.   The game will be held at T.W. Josey high school, and tip-off is set for 2:00 PM!
