Augusta, GA- After going winless for the first part of the 2010-2011 season, the Lady Lions kept pressing toward the mark and picked up their first win, on the first day of the New Year in Carter Gymnasium!
Junior, forward Brittany Pevey(pictured) scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help lead the way in the 60-58 win over the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University. Pevey, who posted her first double-double of the season scored 10 points in the first half. Sophomore forward, Antionette McPhail came up just one point shy of posting a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing a season high 16 rebounds.
Sophomore Michele Brown played the majority of the game, and converted on a basket to give the Lady Lions a 40-33 lead. Brown also connected on 5 of 6 from the free-throw line, scoring a total of seven points for the game. Freshman Baiesha Johnson played 37 minutes, scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds and picked the Lady Panthers for three steals as well.
The Lady Lions went into the locker-rooms down by one point (22-23), but came back out and fought 'til the end. The Lady Lions and Lady Panthers went back and forth, tying the game six times, but Senior guard Shanee’ Butler took the leadership role at the end of the game, and continued to drive to the basket, get fouled, and connect at the charity stripe.
The Lady Panthers were led by Conisha Hicks, who score 19 points.
With the win, the Lady Lions overall record is 1-8 and 1-5 SIAC. The Lady Lions will be back in action, as they host the Panthers of Claflin University, Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in the first half of a doubleheader, with jump-ball at 5:30 PM.
