Paine College welcomes Herman Belton as Head Men's Golf Coach

(Augusta, GA)-- Paine College announced the appointment of Mr. Herman Belton, Jr. as Head Golf Coach and Jones Creek Golf Club as the new home of the Paine College Golf Team.

"I am ecstatic to be here at Paine College and truly committed to growing the program as well as developing the overall performance of the young men of the  Paine College Golf team.

Paine College Golf team captain, Wes Dollar mirrors the new coach's enthusiasm. "Our new coach is excited about being here and we are excited to have him aboard. Being at Jones Creek has given us access to facilities and equipment to help our game as a whole. They've really welcomed us and made this feel truly like home," Dollar said.

The golf team will now utilize Jones Creek Golf Club as their official home facility. "We are delighted to enter in partnership with Paine College for the purpose of enhancing the golf program and giving the players a great facility to practice and call home. THe golf tournament that we host here certainly was the beginning of discussions got the ball rolling to get the team here, not just once a year," Gregg Hemann, Director of Operations at Jones Creek Club.

About Coach Belton

Belton is a native of Camden, South Carolina, Herman entered the US Navy after graduating from Camden High School.  Shortly after completion of his military tour of duty, which included stops in France, Spain, Italy, South America and Great Britain, Herman entered Benedict College (Columbia, SC) as a non-traditional student.  There, he majored in Criminal Justice and had dual minors in Religion and Philosophy.  And, it was there that he also was a stand-out player on the College’s Golf Team.  In May, 2001, Herman graduated from Benedict College, receiving the Bachelor of Science degree.

His first coaching job was at his alma mater – Benedict College.  Coach Belton served as Head Golf Coach for the combined men and women’s golf teams.  Under his golfing tenure, Benedict College was elevated to the distinction of National Minority Division II Collegiate Champions, 2004. After taking over the South Carolina State Men team Coach Belton won the Hall of Fame Golf Tournament 2009 in Atlanta his second tournament out. He went on to have a player to win the PGA Minority Tournament in Division1 that same year and nearly breaking the course record.

From 2006-2009, Coach Belton served as the Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at South Carolina State University.  In just one year, he led the Women’s Golf Team to their first ever first-place win and facilitated their invitation to participate in the National Minority Collegiate Championship Tournament.

Coach Belton firmly believes that all persons have strengths and skills that can be developed when applied in a positive manner.  To Coach Belton, he perceives the game of golf as being one of the most positive manners, thus believing that all persons can play golf even if they never get a chance to visit a golf course.

In his visions entitled, Golf 4 U, a comprehensive concept which uses the elements of golf as the basic indicator to eliminate and reduce negative stressors, Golf N U was created by Coach Belton to teach students how to effectively communicate and interact with others – regardless of their societal position.

Determined to serve as a role model to youth – especially the at-risk and disenfranchised – Coach Belton volunteers in communities and sponsors golf clinics that serve to offset anti-social behaviors of the target population.  His community service includes being on the Board of Palmetto Place, a shelter for foster children.

Accolades and achievements of Coach Belton include:  being a 3-time recipient of the Bill Dickey Scholarship, the youngest ever African American Collegiate Golf Coach, serving on the prestigious South Carolina Golf Course Rating Panel, being named the Benedict College Male Coach of the Year – 2005, and recently, passing of the Professional Ability Qualifying Test (PAT) – a preliminary step toward PGA certification.

Paine College Day at the Georgia Dome:Georgia House and Senate to Recognize Accomplishments of the Late Rosa Tarver Beard and Paine Student, Iry Jernigan, Jr., Navy Reservist

Paine College invites the community to attend the Annual Paine College Day at the Dome on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia. Paine College alumni, students, administrators and supporters will gather at the Dome to participate in activities that are designed to introduce the College to the Georgia State legislators and announce the Institution’s Legislative Agenda.

The Georgia House and Senate will recognize the Late Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard, a 1942 graduate, who founded various organizations that have improved the lives of countless young women and men throughout the Central Savannah River Area. One of her most notable accomplishments is the founding of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, and organization that has advised and cultured young women for over forty-seven years.

Iry Jernigan, Jr., a Navy Reservist and Paine student, will also be recognized by the Georgia House and Senate for an act of bravery and heroism.  The Paine College Biology Major rescued an unconscious woman from a burning car in 2010.

Later on during the day, Dr. George C. Bradley, President, Paine alumni and students will greet Georgia legislators and their staff during a lunch reception under the Dome in room 216 at 12 noon.

Rear Admiral Penelope Slade-Sawyer keynote speaker for Black Family Life Health Disparities Conference

(Augusta, GA)-  Rear Admiral Penelope Slade-Sawyer of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services will serve as keynote speaker for the Black Family Life Health Disparities Conference.  The conference will take place January 20-22, 2011 in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The pre-conference reception will take place on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in the Candler Memorial Library Building at Paine College. Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Professor of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia will serve as speaker for the pre-conference reception.  The event is by invitation only.

RADM Penelope Slade-Sawyer, PT, MSW, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, directs the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and is the Acting Executive Director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS).  RADM Slade-Sawyer is a Commissioned Corps Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service.

As the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, RADM Slade-Sawyer is responsible for strengthening the disease prevention and health promotion priorities of the Department within the collaborative framework of the HHS agencies.  She is a senior health advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health and to the Secretary of HHS.

RADM Slade-Sawyer leads the ODPHP in coordinating three key initiatives for HHS: Healthy People 2010, the Department’s comprehensive set of national disease prevention and health promotion objectives developed to improve the health of all people in the United States; the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published jointly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture every 5 years since 1980, this publication is the statutorily mandated basis for Federal nutrition education activities, and currently in a revision year; and the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, published by HHS, designed to provide information and guidance on the types and amounts of physical activity that provide substantial health benefits for Americans aged 6 years and older. Together, these efforts focus both on preventing disease by addressing major risk factors (such as physical inactivity and poor nutrition) and on reducing the burden of disease through appropriate health screenings and prevention of secondary conditions. In leading these priorities for the Department, RADM Slade-Sawyer, through the HHS agencies and within OPHS, builds on HHS policy and programs based on the best available evidence on how to prevent or mitigate chronic disease through promotion of healthy lifestyle choices, medical screenings, and avoidance of risky behaviors.

Dr. George C. Bradley announced today the appointment of Dr. Tina Y. Cardenas as the Vice President of Student Affairs

Dr. George C. Bradley announced today the appointment of Dr. Tina Y. Cardenas as the Vice President of Student Affairs.
 
Cardenas was appointed Interim Vice President of Student Affairs in March 2010. She will continue to coordinate and supervise the following areas: Office of Career Services, the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Student Activities, Office of Disability Services, Health Clinic and Campus Safety.
 
Also, she will continue to coordinate programs, and activities in the areas of counseling, new student orientation, student housing, student discipline, student activities, student development programs, social regulations, the yearbook, student medical services, disability services, the student center, wellness programs, campus safety, and career services.
 
Cardenas holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from Auburn University, a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from Alabama A&M University, and a Doctor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from Argosy University.

Shirley Franklin, former mayor of Atlanta from 2001-2009, will serve as the keynote speaker at the annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. The observance, which rotates between Augusta State University, Augusta Technical College, Paine College, and the Medical College of Georgia, will be hosted on Friday, Jan. 14, at noon, in the Maxwell Theatre on the ASU campus.

Franklin became Atlanta’s first woman mayor and the first African-American woman to serve as mayor of a major Southern city. During her first term, she cut her own salary by $40,000, cut the Mayor’s staff by 50 percent, and eliminated 277 jobs and 605 vacancies. To fill a budget gap of $82 million, she also recalled nonessential city-owned cars, cell phones, and credit cards and issued an administrative order to freeze vacancies except in public safety.
Prior to Franklin’s re-election in 2005, she was named one of the nation’s five best big-city mayors by Time Magazine, alongside Richard Daley and Michael Bloomberg.  In 2005, she was short-listed for the World Mayor Award.

Over the course of her outstanding career, Franklin has been featured in several publications including Business to Business, the New York Times, Ebony, Jet, Glamour, Atlanta Woman, and Georgia Trend. She also was chosen as one of Atlanta’s movers and shakers in Jezebel magazine.

A leading women’s advocacy group, The White House Project, named Franklin one of 8 in ‘08 female politicians who could make a presidential run, the only non-national politician or governor on the list. Later, Franklin was named co-chair of the 2008 Democratic Convention. She is past president of the National Convention of Democratic Mayors.
Franklin received her bachelor’s degree from Howard University and her master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In May 2002, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Howard University.

Paine College Community to operate under normal operating hours

The Paine College Community will operate under its normal operating hours today. Breakfast will be served in the Peters Campus Center for students at 7:00 a.m., classes will resume at 8:00 a.m., all offices at the institution will open at 9:00 a.m. and course registration will resume at 9:00 a.m. in the Candler Memorial Library Building. 

Spring Convocation is also still scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert-Lamburth Memorial Chapel.

Paine College Community welcomes Dr. W.C. Howard as Special Assistant to the President

Dr. George C. Bradley, announced today the appointment of Dr. W. C. Howard as Special Assistant to the President.

Howard formerly served as Senior Vice President for the College of Professional Adults at Allen University. He has also served as President of Roxbury Community College in Roxbury Crossing, MA, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Talladega College in Talladega, AL. His professional accomplishments include successful SACS re-accreditation at Allen University, Atlanta Metropolitan College and Miles College. He is a renowned national and international lecturer on leadership.

Howard's specialties include professional leadership and faculty development, capital campaigns, grant awards, and curriculum development and implementation.  He has successfully secured over $4 million in grants and aided institutions with increased endowments.

Howard holds degrees in Leadership/Law Planning, Counseling and Social Science/Psychology.

Paine College Community welcomes Mr. Andre Farley as Dean of On-line and Blended Programs

Dr. George C. Bradley, announced today the appointment of Mr. Andre Farley as Dean of On-line and Blended Programs.

Farley formerly served as an Independent Consultant with various institutions of higher education.  He has over 15 years of higher education experience. He has served at Vice President of Enrollment Management at Allen University. He has also served in various positions at Edward Waters College,  Virginia State University, Elizabeth City State University and Benedict College. 

His professional accomplishments include developing and implementing a comprehensive enrollment management system to support the tracking and recruitment of prospects and applicants.

Farley holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of South Carolina, a Master of Business Administration degree and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University.

The Paine College Lion Yearbook Staff is proud to announce Underclassmen Yearbook photographs. The staff of Wilson Photography Studio will be here on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 to take photographs of the freshman, sophomore and junior class. Photography sessions will take place in Candler Memorial Library Building, 1st Floor (Admissions Conference Room) from 12 Noon - 5:00 p.m.

Paine College issues two (2) hour delay for Tuesday, January 11, 2011 workday

(Augusta, GA)--Due to the inclement weather conditions for Central Savannah River Area, the Paine College Community will operate on a two (2) hour delay for Tuesday, January 11, 2011.  The institution will be closed until 11:00AM . All essential personnel is expected to report during normal operating hours.  All other offices will begin operating by 11:00AM.
