The Color Purple actress Desreta Jackson to speak at Paine College Assembly

(Augusta, GA)- The Paine College Department of Media Studies will host actress and entrepreneur, Desreta Jackson on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. Jackson is best known for her shockingly raw portrayal of young Miss Celie, in the The Color Purple, winner of a 1983 Pulitzer Prize, and later film and Broadway musical.

The Paine College Drama Club will host a Theatrical Guidance Forum featuring Jackson on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel, Odeum. The Office of Institutional Advancement will also host a reception for Jackson on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the Candler Memorial Library Building beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Jackson’s role in The Color Purple proved to be a fan favorite because of the physical and emotional abuse the title character had to endure resonated with fans around the World. The Color Purple garnered 11 Academy Award nominations, the highest number to date, and had an incredible impact on American film, producing some of the Nation’s most noted African American film stars and personalities. The role of Miss Celie was split between two actresses, respectively, Jackson, her first film role, and Whoopi Goldberg, Hollywood actress, and ABC's The View’s co-host. In addition to her film work in The Color Purple, Jackson immediately followed up with two successive films, Sister Act, again starring Whoopi Goldberg, and The Mighty Pawns, starring the late Paul Winfield, and Alfonson Ribeiro.

Jackson was born in Tortola, British Virgin Island and came to the United States as a pre-teen. Her family moved to Los Angeles, where she has remained, and created several small businesses. After her early success in film, Jackson opened the doors to Mahogany Mane, a hair care enterprise, and later organized a community based Real Estate venture, buying homes in the area and renovating them. Jackson’s master plan was a failsafe program that taught renters how to pay on time, and communicate in a proactive way to alleviate falling behind, even in a downturn economy.

She continues to work as an actress and producer, creating Internet projects and working on stage. In 2010, The Color Purple celebrated 25 years, and for the first time in all most as many years, many of the film’s cast came together on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a reunion episode as part of Oprah Winfrey’s final 25-year season. In April 2011, Jackson launched her own hair care line, BlackSilk, and was honored at the 7th annual Prestige Award tribute for her contribution to American film, her dedication to community building, and her outreach to young people.

Miss Paine College to compete in national pageant

(AUGUSTA, GA) - Tamakia King, Miss Paine College 2011-2012 will compete in the Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Pageant on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. The pageant will begin at 6:00p.m. The Competition of College Queens showcases young women from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The queens are judged in five categories. Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame serves as a national representative and advocate of HBCUs and receives an academic scholarship and prizes. The pageant is one of many events hosted by the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc.

The mission of The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation is to be a catalyst and partner for ensuring the stability, strength and excellence of the nation’s historically and/or predominately Black colleges and universities.

King serves as Miss Paine College Elect 2011-2012. She is a native of Inglewood, California and her family currently resides in Moreno Valley, California. She is the daughter of Larry and Rosalind King. King is a senior Media Studies major with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations. Since her arrival at Paine College she has been actively involved in a number of activities and organizations including: Pre Alumni Council, Paine College Communications Association, Wesley Fellowship, The Marketing Club, The Lions Activity Board, and the American Marketing Association.

She is a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and has held leadership positions as Vice President of the Paine College Communications Association, Resident Hall Assistant, Miss Kappa Alpha Psi 2010-2011 and currently serves as a member of the Paine College Student Government Association.  Her community involvement includes volunteering with the Shiloh Community Center, Girl Scouts of America, and the Greater than AIDS Campaign in partnership with the Black AIDS Institute in Los Angeles, California.

During her reign, King plans to focus on executing her platform titled The Royal Induction: Call of Duty. The purpose of her platform is to encourage her fellow students to walk in their callings of greatness and not in their current situations. She plans to host a "Queen" series of programs centered around her platform and the promotion the College’s core values especially Service.  This semester she and other Paine College students will participate in the 11th Annual Miracle Mile Walk on October 15th to join the Augusta community in raising breast cancer awareness.

King plans to attend graduate school immediately following graduation and aspires to own a Christian public relations firm as well as have a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate illiteracy amongst young men ages 9- 13 in impoverished communities.

Paine College to host 3rd Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Men’s Golf Team

(Augusta, GA) –Paine College invites golfers to the 3rd Annual Paine College Golf Tournament on Monday, August 29, 2011 at Jones Creek Golf Club in Evans, Georgia. Since its inception the tournament committee has raised more than $45,000 to benefit Paine College golf program and scholarships.

Golfers who participate will be playing for a worthy cause. All of the proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Paine College Golf Program and golf scholarships.Senior PGA Golfer and honorary tournament chair, Jim Dent will also play in the tournament.  Golfers and guests will have a chance to meet and share the course with Dent.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and a complimentary Callaway Demo will take place from 8:45 a.m.- 10:45 a.m.

Shotgun start time is 11:00 a.m. Contest include closest to the pin, longest drive, and hole-in-one sponsored by Jim Hudson Lexus. Participants can also look forward to a silent auction, raffles and first, second and third place team prizes. Brunch for registered golfers will be provided by Chick-Fil-A and Outback Steakhouse will provide dinner during the 19th Hole Awards Dinner.

“Partnering with Paine College to increase scholarships for deserving student athletes demonstrates the community’s strong commitment and willingness to invest in our competitive golf program,” said George C. Bradley, president of Paine College. “Building a robust scholarship fund increases access to a quality education.”

Paine College announces new academic structure and new deans

(Augusta, GA) – Dr. George C. Bradley, President announced the appointment of Dr. Steven Thomas as the dean of its newly created School of Professional Studies and Dr. Emily Williams as the dean of its newly created School of Arts and Sciences. The new appointments come on the helm of the College’s new Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Marcus Tillery.

More than three years ago, Paine College embarked on a 5- year strategic plan. The strategic plan called for the College to build on its legacies and capitalize on its achievements to move closer to the vision and mission of becoming a premier liberal arts College in our region and in the nation.

This plan has helped the institution implement the reorganization of its academic structure, moving its academic programs from divisions to schools. The School of Professional Studies encompasses the Department of Business Administration, Department of Education and Department of Media Studies. The School of Arts and Sciences encompasses the Department of Humanities, Department of Social Sciences, and Department of Mathematics, Sciences and Technology.

“The two schools will afford the College the opportunity to have deans who will raise resources to strengthen student resources for scholarly work and to develop graduate programs,” said Bradley.

Each of the deans has distinct visions for each school.

“The new structure provides an opportunity for the deans to foster relationships with industry and gauge their needs in an effort to develop innovative programs and produce graduates that can meet those needs,” said Thomas

This strategic move positions the College continue to provide its students with exceptional learning experiences in a global context. It is committed to supporting every student’s development and success, recruiting and promoting faculty of the highest credentials and standards of excellence, creating a supportive campus community and engaging the larger community and world.

Williams believes that each school will play an integral role in College’s path toward regional recognition.

“I see the School of Arts and Sciences assisting the institution with in its efforts to become a destination college for the study of the liberal arts, Williams said. “This structure will help our students easy identify majors and begin preparation for graduate school and other professional opportunities.”

Paine College launched the two-school model beginning August 8.

(Augusta, GA)- Paine College is proud to welcome the Class of 2015. August 3rd marks the beginning of a new journey for hundreds of Paine College freshmen. From August 3-7, 2011 students from around the country will walk through the "Gateway to the World" as students at Paine.

The New Student Orientation Program is designed to both acquaint students with Paine College and to welcome them to their new community. Students will participate in a wide variety of workshops, activities and will have the opportunity to meet and get to know many of their classmates, faculty, and college administrators.

More specifically, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the campus, meet with an academic advisor to finalize their schedules and learn about the vibrant academic life at the College. Freshmen will also participate in two time-honored ceremonies. Alumni and friends of Paine College are encouraged to attend the Freshman Parting Ceremony on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. and the Freshman Induction Ceremony on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

"These ceremonies are held to observe a person's entry into a new stage of life," said Dr. Tina Marshall-Bradley, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Paine College reaffirmed by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Dr.  George C. Bradley, President, announced that Paine College received reaffirmation of its accreditation for the next 10 years by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).  The announcement comes after a three-year self-assessment conducted by Paine College officials and an on-campus visit by a SACS-COC approved team of administrators from peer institutions.

“This accomplishment indicates that Paine College possesses the academic programs, services, and resources to make quality offerings to students.  Further, the self-assessment allows the College to evaluate its programs and work toward becoming a premier Liberal Arts College in the region,” said Dr. Bradley.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the recognized regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degrees. The Commission on Colleges is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process.

The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. It is important that institutions retain accreditation in order to receive benefits from research funding and student aid linked to Title IV.  Because of the rigorous process of accreditation, parents and students can trust that the education they are paying for is valuable. And, many potential employers review a job applicant’s educational history to make sure that the candidate received his or her education from an accredited college or university.

The self-assessment was steered by the Paine College Leadership Team under which fell two committees: 1) The Compliance Certification Team (CCT) prepared the report that demonstrated the SACS-COC Principles of Accreditation, and 2) The Quality Enhancement Plan Committee (QEPT) developed a well-defined and focused topic to enhance student learning.

By design, the QEP Team, co-chaired by a representative from Academic Affairs and from Student Affairs, consisted of faculty representing a variety of disciplines, staff from every major unit at the College, students and alumni.  During the early stages of the self-study, faculty engaged in dialogue about skills they thought would improve the quality of education for Paine College students.  After multiple discussions, surveys with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members, it was determined that the learning outcome to be addressed was engaging students in readings that developed the kinds of analytical skills necessary for an information-rich society.  Thus, the Paine College QEP Learning Interactively Outside the Norm (L.I.O.N.):  Great Books at Paine College took form.  This ongoing initiative focuses on enhancing student literacy and learning by establishing elevated expectations for engaging complex texts, by interjecting innovative programs to promote the reading of core texts among faculty, staff and students to create literary dialogs between members of the Paine community and to link literary works with contemporary issues.

Dr. Bradley expressed his appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the SACS-COC reaffirmation of the College’s accreditation.  “This achievement speaks volumes about the caliber of programs, faculty and staff at the College.  We look forward to raising the bar as we raise results.”

To gain or maintain accreditation with the Commission on Colleges, an institution must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges applies the requirements of its Principles to all applicants, candidates, and member institutions, regardless of type of institution (public, private for-profit, private not-for-profit).

State of Georgia recognizes Paine Alumna with bridge dedication

 (Augusta, GA) – The State of Georgia will dedicate the 15th Street bridge over Wrightsboro Road to honor the life and legacy of the late Rosa T. Beard, ’42. The dedication service will take place on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Candler Memorial Library Building on the campus of Paine College. Immediately following the dedication service, the unveiling of the commemorative bridge sign will take place at the (west side) of the bridge at 15th Street and Central Avenue. The event is open to the public.

Rosa T. Beard was an educator in the Richmond County Public Schools, founder of the Rocket Club and the Rosa T. Beard Debutant Club. Her life spanned nine decades with seventy of them actively engaged in making a difference in the lives of young people and being actively engaged in the Augusta community.

Her generosity was felt and remembered by many; especially Rep. Wayne Howard, D-Augusta who believed because of her unwavering service to the community something should be done to honor her legacy. “She was bridge builder for many decades, “ Howard said.

After determining that bridge was available for naming, Howard moved forward with the General Assembly to name the bridge in Beard’s honor. According to Howard, an “overwhelming majority” voted in favor of the naming of the bridge and later the Gov. Nathan Deal signed off.

The 15th Street Bridge was chosen because it was a bridge that Beard traveled for decades. It was in close proximity to her residence, T.W. Josey High School, Paine College, and Shiloh Community Center all, which she spent numerous hours of service.

“I hope that the community embraces it as something we should do more often to identify those who positively stood out in our communities. This shows our youth that we should do things to preserve history and this is one thing I thought we could do to preserve her name in history,” Howard said.

Earlier this year, the Georgia House and Senate recognized the Beard for her public service and the founding of various organizations that have improved the lives of countless young women and men throughout the Central Savannah River Area. One of her most notable accomplishments is the founding of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, an organization that has advised and cultured young women for over forty-seven years.

Beard has been recognized for her service to youth in general, young women in particular and a committed service to the CSRA community and she does so with love, care and the most humble spirit. She is the recipient of the “Dream Keeper Award, the NAACP Presidential Service Award, the "key to the city of Augusta" presented in 2006 by Deke Copenhaver, mayor of Augusta and WRDW -News 6 recognized her for there “Making a Difference” feature. The City of Augusta recognized her with a proclamation for her dedication as a community servant.

Beard was an active and dedicated member of the Paine College National Alumni Association and the Augusta Paine College Club, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a member of the Board of Directors of Shiloh Community Center and Antioch Baptist Church.

Carla C. Smith, '03 recognized as one of Atlanta's Power 30 under 30

Smith, ’03 is regarded as one of Atlanta’s emerging leaders, speakers and trainers in the Social Services and Human Services arena.  Smith is passionate about assisting all people with becoming their best self, ensuring the core needs of others are being met and committed to the progression of her community.  Her passion has led to her recent recognition at the 7th Annual Atlanta Power 30 Under 30™ Awards.

The awards ceremony recognized the accomplishments of young professionals under the age of 30 who display strong leadership abilities as they consistently excel within their communities and respective professional industries.  Smith was recognized in the area of Community Service.

About Carla C. Smith

Smith is the CEO and Co-Owner of Georgia Counseling and Social Services Consultants (GCSSC), LLC, a social services consulting, program development and leadership training firm. Three University of Georgia School of Social Work Alumni started the firm in 2010.  Smith spearheaded the creation of the organization following her work in non-profit management and after looking at the state of the social services sector, examining the services being provided as well as the increased need for quality, results driven initiatives. The driving force behind GCSSC, LLC is its commitment and dedication to the community.

Previously, Smith served as Regional Supervisor for Youth Villages, a Tennessee based non-profit organization and was the lead team member for the new services site in Atlanta, Georgia. She oversaw all programming in the Atlanta region including staffing; work with external customers on the local, state and national level to include Casey Family Programs, leadership trainings, fundraising events and partnership trainings for customers.

She also served as the Region lead for the State of Tennessee’s Governor’s Mentoring Initiative in 2007 where she was a member of the development team of then Governor Phil Bredesen’s new program for children that were in foster care and the custody of the state. Smith was responsible for the marketing/growth of the program in the East Tennessee region, recruitment of mentors for foster children and educating the community on Governor Bredesen’s vision of the program and the impact to be made in the life of a child. Smith was fortunate enough to do a launching event in Knoxville, Tennessee with then Mayor and current Governor of Tennessee Bill Haslam in order to promote awareness for children in foster care and the need for mentors across the State of Tennessee. The event ignited a call to citizens in East Tennessee and the number of mentors quickly moved to nearly 80 mentors in less than a year.

Smith has traveled the United States as well as internationally to Lima, Peru and Montrious, Haiti providing leadership development and conducting social services research related presentations. Her expertise includes leadership/program development, evidenced based practices, project management, at-risk children, women and children issues, commercially and sexually exploited children and child welfare initiatives. Smith is dedicated to the work in the social services sector and committed to the enhancement of these services. Smith feels that superior services to our children and families are a direct investment into our community and that providing others with quality, results driven services at the onset will prove to have a direct positive impact upon those being served.

She has completed extensive leadership trainings to include the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Leadership Fellows Program, Franklin Covey, Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership and Wilson’s Learning – Building Relationship Versatility. In 2005, Smith was selected to be one of two non-professor members of The University of Georgia’s School of Social Work Dean Search Committee.

Smith is currently completing the prestigious United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta VIP program, which trains leaders for roles on nonprofit boards. Smith currently serves on the Governor’s Office for Children and Families Task Force for Commercially and Sexually Exploited Children. Smith is also a member of the Junior League of Atlanta where she has previously been on the Community Needs Assessment Committee and now serves on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Committee specifically focusing on training and awareness issues. Smith also serves on the State of Georgia Department of Human Services OPOUM task force.

She is also active in her church and community organizations including The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church Social Action Committee, Business Connection League where she serves as the Secretary and the New Life Ministry in which she serves as the Assistant Coordinator. Smith also serves on The Museum School of Avondale Estates Parent Teacher Organization Board where she serves as the Vice President. In 2010, Smith served as a mentor for The Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation with teen girls ages 13-18 that live in the Metro Atlanta area.

In March 2011, Smith was selected by the Junior League of Atlanta to be the incoming Chair of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Committee where she will lead a team of Junior League of Atlanta women and be responsible for all CSEC marketing campaigns, Business Empowerment Breakfast, Empowerment summits for young girls ages 10-14 in order to build self-esteem and confidence in girls at risk for sexual exploitation, as well as other special projects.

A native of Augusta, Georgia Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia and a Master’s degree in Social Work from The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Smith recently became ABD and is currently completing her Doctorate studies in Organizational Leadership at Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Silas Norman Jr., '62 recognized with Wayne State University School of Medicine's Distinguished Service Award

Silas Norman Jr., M.D. a longtime member of the Wayne State University School of Medicine faculty and a driving force for diversity, fairness and compassion for the underserved was honored at the Wayne State University's 2011 commencement ceremony.

Silas Norman Jr., M.D., associate dean of Admissions, Diversity and Inclusion, received the School of Medicine’s Distinguished Service Award at the Fox Theater on May 24.

Valerie Parisi, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., dean of the School of Medicine, noted that Dr. Norman exemplifies a notable quote by Albert Einstein: “Only a life lived for others is worth living.”“He has served the school with distinction for more than 25 years,” she said. “He has overseen one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States.”

In accepting the award from Dean Parisi and Maryjean Schenk, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., vice dean of Medical Education, Dr. Norman said, “To be honored for the service that we give is a distinct privilege and an honor.”

Dr. Norman, a 1976 graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, received its Trailblazer Award in 2010. The award honors outstanding alumni and faculty who have made substantial contributions and demonstrated courage, initiative, innovation, risk-taking and leadership.

A medical suite at the State Prison of Southern Michigan in Jackson is named after Dr. Norman, who served as the facility’s medical director. His commitment to social and humanistic medicine also led him to serve as chief medical officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections and medical director for the Wayne County Jails.

He has served as a consultant to the Detroit Health Care for the Homeless project and to the Detroit Health Department, working to see that thousands of uninsured and underserved people received much-needed health care.
In 2000, Dr. Norman received the Alumni Achievement Award from the United Negro College Fund. That same year the Wayne State University Organization of Black Alumni selected him for its Alumni Achievement Award.

The Michigan Department of Community Health presented him with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Vision Award in 2000.

Henderson, ‘00 recognized in Atlanta's Inaugural "Powerprenuer" Spotlight Series

(Atlanta, GA)- The Honorable Kasim Reed, Mayor of Atlanta in partnership with Velvet Suite Marketing and Black Enterprise Magazine honored nine "Powerprenuers in its Inaugural "Powerprenuer" Series last month. Among the honorees was J.R. Henderson, '00.

The panel of honorees, which included Disturbing the Peace's Chaka Zulu, Atlanta businessman Christian Ruffin, Atlanta recording artist Kandi Burruss and fashion designer Mychael Knight, were acknowledged by Black Enterprise Magazine, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed's Office and The Velvet Suite Marketing at its Inaugural Atlanta's "Powerprenuer" Spotlight Series.

This series, created by Melissa Johnson CEO of The Velvet Suite Marketing pays homage to people whom impact areas of business pertinent to the growth of Atlanta's metropolitan area. Henderson was recognized as founder of The National Lighthouse Foundation, which is a 501c3 organization that exists as a structure to provide a continuous and intermittent path for our nations youth. The Foundation serves as a catalyst to provoke significant change in achieving the hopes and dreams of America's youth.

Henderson, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, has spent over 10 years helping students achieve their goals. He is committed to promoting professionalism and ensuring continual success in the lives of today’s youth. He has worked with of youth in several capacities. Henderson has served as a motivational speaker for many organizations, which include the Department of Family and Children Services, Georgia CASA Senator Connie Stoked College for Kids Program, Georgia Independent Living Program, and more. Henderson has traveled to Haiti and South Africa inspiring thousands. He currently serves as chairman of the Jim Casey Youth Opportunity Board for Metro-Atlanta.

"It's also always humbling to be recognized for what you do," Henderson said. "I always keep the challenges of the young people of the national urban community in the forefront of my mind and I know my work is far from done".

The National Lighthouse Foundation can be found at local public schools, in the communities or hosting specialty events that consistently raise awareness of the lack of fundamental needs still ravaging communities of the greater Atlanta and the continental U.S.
