(Augusta, GA) -Each year EBONY Magazine does a feature on Historically Black College and University (HBCU) queens.  Last year, EBONY Magazine's Top 10 HBCU Queens feature introduced a new online voting component and included a smaller-than-usual representation of elegantly displayed queens on the pages of EBONY Magazine.  Although this year’s entire “HBCU Queens” feature will find a home on the Web site (ebony.com), they will again honor 10 only queens inside the September 2011 issue of the magazine.

Paine College valedictorian took nontraditional route

The realization came to Deborah Rashada while she was lying flat out in bed with a broken ankle, staring at the ceiling. Rashada, with her 11-month-old granddaughter Yusra Martin, realized she could do more with her life than raise a family.

Until then, every ounce of her had been dedicated to the happiness of her family. She raised nine children and had her soul mate by her side to prove it.

She graduated from Butler High School in 1978, skipped college to marry at 18 and never stopped to worry about herself until that day in 2005 when she toppled like a bowling pin from her roller blades.

"I was lying in bed with a broken ankle feeling sorry for myself," Rashada said. "I was very satisfied being a wife and mother, but I wanted more for myself. I asked myself 'Is this the best I can do?' "

It wasn't, and as soon as she could walk again, Rashada, not quite 50, enrolled in college.

In 2007, Rashada graduated from the Georgia Military College where she earned an associate's degree in education. The real challenge was when she continued her studies at Paine College to pursue a bachelor's in education.

Going back wasn't easy.

Too often in life she felt excluded from conversations with people more educated than her, so when she went back to the classroom she didn't risk missing a detail.

She read every word of assigned readings and didn't hesitate to raise her hand during lectures. There were grumbles from students generations younger than her, who were just eager to get through with classes and close their books.That's where she learned to balance her greenness as a student with her wisdom as a mother.

"I just thought, 'What if I was 18 years old? What would I do? I didn't want to turn around in my desk and say 'I'm old enough to be your momma, so what's your problem?' "

Nontraditional students like Rashada are a minority at local colleges and universities, and their identities are hard to define. Some consider the 19-year-old going to college with three kids nontraditional. Others are the men going into the nursing field or the 50-year-old finally getting her bachelor's degree.

Less than 3 percent of students at Paine last year fell into the nontraditional category. Out of the 1,100 students that graduated from Augusta State University in the spring, 51 of them were 25 or older when they enrolled. But Dr. Paulette Harris, chair of the ASU advocacy group for nontraditional and evening students, said the university tries to encourage these students to join the traditional campus.

The university has a study room in the library specifically for students lugging their children along and offers free tutoring for adults and their children.

"(Older students) really want to do well and at the same time meet all their other needs that they have, and it is a stretch to balance all that sometimes," Harris said.

To Rashada, it was almost an obligation to show that students returning to school after raising a family had their place in the classroom. To do that, she'd break from her duties as a wife to read in the library in the evenings -- sometimes until 4 a.m. -- grateful for a husband who encouraged her in pursuing a dream away from home.

"My husband was so understanding," she said. "He said 'Deborah, don't worry about me. I'll eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner if I have to.' Of course, I'd never let him do that. He's my best friend."

As graduation approached, Rashada was ending her Paine experience with a 3.96 GPA, higher than any other student of any age in her class. When it came time for the commencement ceremony May 1, she walked to the podium for her valedictorian speech and told an intent crowd about her journey.

She described how grateful she was to have the gift of education. She credited her Islamic faith for her strength and thanked Allah for helping her succeed.

The hundreds in the William B. Bell Auditorium fell to a hush when she said she once thought she would never feel happiness again after the death of one of her children in 2000 but receiving an education proved her wrong.

"I thank God for blessing me to live long enough to finally make my mother proud of me, the oldest of her six children," Rashada said.

She fought back tears as her husband, all of her children and all nine grandchildren watched her from the balcony.

She thanked the audience and walked across the stage to a standing ovation.

"It was amazing," said her daughter Fareeda, later remembering the speech. "Not only raising nine kids, being a wife and at the same time going back to school and being the top of her class, there's no better example."

As she left her graduation ceremony and walked out of the auditorium to celebrate with family, Rashada felt a tap on her shoulder. A woman, somewhere in her 30s or 40s, stood before her teary-eyed. "I just want to say, because of you, because of your speech, I'm going back to school," Rashada remembers the woman saying.

Rashada began teaching eighth-grade Georgia Studies at Langford Middle School after she earned her certification in December.To have her own students, her own classroom and to slowly work for their respect has been a lifelong dream.

"The night before my first day, I couldn't sleep I was so excited," Rashada said. "I kept wondering 'What does it feel like to have your own classroom?'"

Because of budget cuts facing the Richmond County School System, Rashada is still waiting to see if the district can offer her a classroom position next year.

She hopes she'll be able to continue touching students' lives, but knows in a way she already has.




Paine students secure leadership positions with Georgia Association of Educators Student Program

(Augusta, GA) - During the Georgia Association of Educators Student Program (GAE-SP) Annual GAE Spring Student Retreat  Natasha Adebiyi was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Georgia Association of Educators state board. The retreat held at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA included GAE-SP chapters from institutions across the state, and hosted several workshops that promoted student engagement in elementary, middle, and secondary classrooms.

"Having opportunities like this will help enable us to become effective teachers.  It is great to be able to have say in decisions related to education. I am excited for my peers and all of our positions,"Adebiyi said.

The GAE Student Program is a pre-professional program sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators and the National Education Association; helps prepare education majors for a brighter professional future. Especially for education majors, GAE’s Student Program is designed to provide college students with the opportunity to make their voice heard locally, statewide, and nationally through activities that affect their chosen profession—teaching.
GAE’s Student Program works to help students make that smooth transition from the campus to the classroom by exploring the critical non-instructional aspects of the profession. The Program works with its members to make sure they learn about salaries, competency testing, evaluations, discipline, certification requirements, stress, and political and legislative activities.

The Executive Board of the Paine College Chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators Student Program (GAE-SP) were all nominated and elected to serve as state delegates for the GAE state conference in Atlanta, GA.  The state delegates are Alexis Barber, Jameelah Jones, Jordan Webb, Natasha Adebiyi, Robert Whigham, and ShaQuawn Hines.

As state delegates, the students attend each GAE state conference. Each delegate has also applied to become a national delegate. Adebiyi, Jameelah Jones, Alexis Barber, ShaQuawn Hines and Jordan Webb were selected as national delegates. They will attend the National Education Association (NEA) representative assembly conference in Chicago, IL, which takes place June 30-July 5.

Paine College Announces $1.6 Million Technology Grant Award

(Augusta, GA) - Paine College is a sound investment.  These words resonated throughout the press conference that was held to announce a major grant that was awarded to Paine College in the amount of $1.6 million.   Paine College officials joined senior executives from CampusEAI Consortium to announce the award that will impact the living, learning and work environment for the entire campus.

The White House Initiatives on Historically Black Colleges and Universities endorsed CampusEAI in March 2010 and encouraged HBCUs to apply for the competitive CampusEAI technology grants to build and support institutions’ capacity to do business more efficiently.

The CampusEAI Grant Program is designed to cover the cost of software, hardware, and services associated with the implementation of a Campus Portal Solution, an intranet portal that integrates with online learning, administrative computing and student services systems.  Under the grant award, project management, installation and training costs necessary to install and operate a Campus Portal will be provided.
The CampusEAI grant awarded to Paine College will provide three major distinct services:
1)      myCampus Single Sign-On Platform will integrate with Paine College’s Microsoft Active Directory and provide students, faculty and staff at Paine member institutions with Single Sign-On access to applications such as Jenzabar, Blackboard, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Social Media. 

2)      After Hours Helpdesk Support center will provide coverage from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each day and night.  A faculty, staff, or student will be able to call the helpdesk support number after 6:00 p.m. each day and speak to a live customer service agent designated for Paine College.

Michael Hicks, Director of Information Technology, said, “Today is a historical day at Paine College in the area of technology.  We expect our level of technological proficiency to move to a new level of excellence.  The Single Sign-On product will give us the ability to eliminate multiple log-ins and accounts, thus promoting efficiency and ease of navigation.  And, the 24 hour helpdesk hosted by CampusEAI support staff will provide assistance to our campus community after business hours and on weekends.”
Leroy Summers, Vice President of Fiscal Affairs and Administration, stated that CampusEAI is currently evaluating Paine College for another grant that will offer real time Disaster Recovery in the event of a catastrophic occurrence that will cause destruction of data.  When awarded, the Disaster Recovery product, valued at nearly $1 million, will allow the College’s critical data to be housed off-campus in a secured location and accessible within hours.
Brandon Brown, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, stated that Paine College remains a sound investment and it was evident with the College’s ability to garner major competitive grant awards and support from the private, public and the federal level.

Paine College’s Class of 1970 Returns Forty Years Later to Participate in Commencement Exercises

Paine College will recognize the Class of 1970 during its 129th Commencement Convocation on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. in the William Bell Auditorium located in Augusta, Georgia.  The Honorable James E. Clyburn, Assistant Democratic Leader in the 112th Congress, will address the Class of 2011, the Golden Class of 1961, and the Class of 1970.

The Class of 1970 was unable to participate in the College’s Commencement exercise more than 40 years ago due to the May 1970 Augusta race riot that was sparked by the death of a sixteen year-old youth whose cries went unheard in a county jail.  The brutal murder of the sixteen year old was followed by protests which resulted in the deaths of six black men during the riots.  Dr. E. Clayton Calhoun, President of Paine College, and faculty voted to safeguard the students and moved to temporarily close its doors.  The graduating seniors never experienced a formal Commencement exercise and received their diplomas via regular mail service.

According to Paine College Historian, Dr. Mallory Millender, the National Guard surrounded the campus during the race riots.  Some of the students were taunted by members of the community for their refusal to participate in retaliatory acts against whites. Many of the students did not trust the National Guard that was sent by Governor Lester Maddox to protect the campus community.  It was the general consensus that the National Guard was sent to ‘contain’ and not protect the faculty and students.  Thus, Paine College students armed themselves with guns to protect themselves and their fellow classmates.  Alice Miller Simpkins, Class of 1970, a member of the Paine College Concert Choir, recalled her return to the campus after being away on tour.  She stated, “As we approached the campus, the bus driver instructed us to lower our heads. He drove on to the campus and parked very close to our residence halls.  Before we were allowed to disembark, Paine students armed with rifles entered the bus while others surrounded the bus to stand guard.  The armed students escorted us to our dormitories.”

1970 was the year that 100,000 people demonstrated in Washington, DC against the Vietnam War.  Tragically, it was the same year in which after a number of days of protest against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia, the National Guard fired on and killed four student protesters at Kent State University and injured ten others on May 4, 1970.   President Calhoun and faculty feared that a similar tragedy would occur on the campus of a small Black College.

Elizabeth Bentley Simpson, Class of 1970, recalled the tumultuous time that led to the closing of her Alma Mater just days prior the Commencement Convocation. “We understood that the College closed out of the concern and safety for the students,” stated Elizabeth.  We witnessed man’s inhumanity to man and the most troubling factor was that the racial tensions and hatred for one another carried forth from generation to generation.  The Class of 1970 and other students learned from the experience and I believe that we emerged stronger.  We knew we were going to experience racism and bigotry and knowing that caused us to work harder.”     

Dr. George C. Bradley, fourteenth President of Paine College, commented, “The Class of 1970 and so many other students stood for equality and social justice for mankind.  Paine College students had been at the forefront of social justice issues for many years prior the 1970 race riots.”

Historians have credited Paine College students, a strong coalition of blacks and whites, and organizations such as the NAACP, with desegregating the city of Augusta in 1960.  The student movement in Augusta officially began with Paine College students who in defiance of Jim Crow policies, staged sit-ins at local restaurants; drank from water fountains that were labeled “White Only”; and were arrested and jailed for disorderly conduct for their refusal to adhere to Jim Crow laws. 

In 1960, Paine College students staged a peaceful protest as they sat down in the front sections of the city buses in the segregated city of Augusta.  The students refused to leave their seats when demanded by the bus drivers.  Police arrested eleven of the students.  Later, the courts found the students guilty of disorderly conduct and fined them $45 each.  On August 9, five students from Paine College (Henry Taylor, Thomas Snowden, William Chambers, Jimmy Dukes and Silas Norman) filed a suit in the U.S. District Court.  The case, Taylor v. City of Augusta, sought to eliminate Jim Crow seating on city buses.  The Paine students asked the courts to recognize the illegality of the seating policy and sought an injunction against the city of Augusta to prohibit such seating. In 1962, two years after the students filed the initial suit, the federal judges sided with the plaintiffs.

Dr. Bradley cited that Paine College had a history of being an advocate for social justice.  “Paine College students were instrumental in desegregating city buses in Augusta and their actions led to a legal precedent for the state of Georgia.  It has been ever-present in the DNA of Paine College to stand tall for justice and equality.  It is appropriate that we invite the Class of 1970 to participate in the College’s Commencement exercises, an event that symbolizes a milestone in academic and scholarly excellence.  They were not afforded this honor due in 1970 and therefore it is fitting that we invite them to experience a formal Commencement exercise.”

Of note, the Paine College faculty issued a statement entitled “When America’s Dream is Denied” in the Augusta Chronicle Newspaper to the citizens of Augusta on May 18, 1970.  In an excerpt from the full-paged statement, the faculty offered the Paine College facilities and personnel as a clearing-house for efforts to establish better communication between the various groups within the community.  The faculty also recommended peaceful solutions and urged the community to address economic and social injustices.

Paine College Department of Athletics Launches New Web Site

(Augusta, GA)- - Paine College has partnered with SIDEARM Sports to launch a new athletics web site. The new home for the Lions will be www.paineathletics.com <http://www.paineathletics.com>  The new site can be accessed directly or by clicking on the athletics tab of the www.paine.edu <http://www.paine.edu>  web site.

The web site will be the source for all news, information, scores and schedules on all athletic programs at Paine College. It will launch with a unique new design and a number of innovative features including video clips, a revolving headlines area highlighting the top five athletic stories and plenty of content for fans of Paine College athletics.
“The new web home for Paine Athletics will be the one-stop shop for alumni, fans, donors, students, and faculty/staff to find the inside scoop on Lion Athletics.  The sleek, user-friendly design will allow our supporters to quickly access the information they need to follow the Lions,” said Tim Duncan, Paine College Athletic Director.
“Moreover, we will be able to drive more revenue by providing additional content for corporate sponsors in the Augusta community and beyond.  In the coming weeks and months, we will add additional content and features to better take advantage of the exciting new partnership with SIDEARM Sports and the SIAC,” Duncan said.

Paine College offers five men and five women varsity sports. Each sport competes at the NCAA Division II level and in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The website will be powered by SIDEARM Sports, a top collegiate athletic web-based content management solution that has a client list of nearly 500 colleges.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced the partnership with SIDEARM Sports, to redesign and vertically integrate all SIAC member schools’ sports sites under the SIDEARM banner in July 2010.

Paine College 129th Commencement Convocation streaming LIVE on WFXG.com

Augusta, GA- Paine College's 129th Commencement Convocation will be streaming LIVE on WFXG.com. The College is working with FOX 54- WFXG-TV to provide streaming coverage to anyone in the world. This is the first time that the College has provided its graduates and other constituents the opportunity to view the ceremony LIVE via the World Wide Web.

The commencement ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. at The William Bell Auditorium in Augusta, Georgia will be available for viewing LIVE on wfxg.com by anyone, anywhere who has access to the Internet.  Family, friends, alumni and other constituents of Paine College can view the ceremony in real time from a computer.  This year's commencement address will be delivered by The Honorable James E. Shanice Wilson receives Ken Bernhardt Outstanding Collegiate Marketer Award AMA Atlanta Collegiate Chapter

The Atlanta Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) has raised more than $100,000 for the Ken Bernhardt Outstanding Collegiate Marketer Award, which honors outstanding marketing students from local Georgia colleges.  Senior Shanice Wilson was one of five students to receive the honor and a scholarship.

"This scholarship award and honor are both amazing," Wilson said. "I'm really excited that I was able to represent my college. This honor also gives me the confidence to pursue my dreams after graduation."           

The scholarship was awarded to five recipients $500 in 2011. Funds were raised through a personal endowment from Dr. Ken Bernhardt, Taylor E. Little Jr. Professor of Marketing and Special Assistant to the Dean of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, and corporate gifts from AT&T, AirTran, Cox, HoneyBaked Ham, 22 Squared, Enguage Media and other partners. Ken Bernhardt matched dollar for dollar all corporate donations.

“We are overwhelmed by the generous support from our community partners. Their generosity will help us recognize Atlanta’s top marketing students for many years to come,” said Dr. Ken Bernhardt, the scholarship’s founder, sponsor and namesake. “This year’s scholarship recipients represent the best and brightest and were selected for their driving passion for marketing, superior skills and dedication to their AMA chapter.”

Dr. Bernhardt has been an active member of AMA since 1969. He joined the organization as a collegiate member and has dedicated his time and effort to AMA in a host of local and national roles, including former Atlanta chapter president and former National Chairman of the Board. In 2001, he received the AMA Wayne Lemburg Award for Lifetime Service to AMA for his commitment to Marketing and Leadership. Dr. Bernhardt founded the GSU Marketing Roundtable and the Marketing Awards for Excellence (MAX Awards). He currently serves on the Executive Advisory Board of AMA Atlanta and Professor of Marketing at Georgia State University. He also serves on numerous non-profit and for-profit boards.

Paine College appoints Tim Duncan Athletic Director

Paine College made it official Friday morning announcing Tim Duncan as its new Athletic Director.   Duncan signed a contract with Paine College and will officially start May 9, 2011.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to become the Director of Athletics at Paine College.  The chance to work with President Bradley, a former college student-athlete, and to become the first non-coach Athletic Director, was the unique combination that intrigued Lisa and I to take advantage of this opportunity. I look forward to working with the coaches, faculty and staff to provide the best experience possible – academically, athletically and socially for our student athletes,” commented Duncan.

Tim Duncan, a fund-raising professional with a demonstrated track record in the public and private sectors, began his association with the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) program as Associate Athletic Director for Development and Executive Director of UNCW Student Aid Association (Seahawk Club) in the spring of 2009 and was appointed Associate Athletic Director for Major Gifts in January of 2011.

Dr. Rosemary DePaolo, Chancellor, UNC Wilmington, stated that Duncan would bring invaluable experience and tremendous pride to the athletics program at Paine. “He understands the fundamental importance of supporting student-athletes as they pursue their academic and athletic goals.”

Duncan previously served as Director of the M Club at the University of Memphis, where he helped the Tigers increase their revenue by 35 percent and membership by 40 percent during his first year. He also solicited major gifts from donors and former student-athletes, including the largest single gift ($1 million) for naming rights to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition, he spearheaded the strategic planning, direction and management for the school's former letter winners. He was an integral part of UM's annual athletic fundraising and major gifts programs.

Dr. George C. Bradley, President of Paine College, commented that Duncan has a wealth of experience in fundraising and his athletic attributes as a former player will equip him to develop a successful program that will ensure the success for student athletes.  “We believe that Tim will play a viable role in helping to move the Paine College Athletic program to the next level,” said Bradley.

Prior to Duncan’s appointment at Memphis, he was a managing partner in PRStore, a marketing firm in Memphis. He developed strategies for small business owners and managed store operations and personnel.

The Memphis native began his career path as a public relations coordinator for Russell Corporation in Midland, Ga., in 1996. He assisted in managing sponsorships for the National Football League, Major League Baseball and the NCAA, and coordinated various other promotional programs for two years.

From 1998-2003, Duncan worked as an assistant marketing manager and marketing manager at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, N.C. He assisted in managing the execution of a $70 million event marketing program initially and later managed the start-up of a $13 million program for one of the company's brands. He also coordinated 51 high-profile events for R.J. Reynolds, including NASCAR Winston Cup and NHRA Drag Racing.

In 2003, Duncan founded Infrared Marketing, LLC, to develop strategies for Fortune 500 companies who wanted to accomplish their marketing objectives.

Duncan is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and the National Letterwinners Association (NLWA).

He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration at Memphis in 1992 and completed his Master of Science Degree in Sports Administration at Grambling State in 1997.

Duncan played four years on the Memphis men's basketball team and helped the Tigers and former coach Larry Finch reach the NCAA's Elite Eight during his senior year in 1992.

Duncan is married to the former Lisa Farris and they have three children, Tyson, Turner and Tatum.

Alice M. Simpkins elected to national board of the Association for Institutional Research

Alice M. Simpkins was recently elected to serve as the 2011-2012 Associate Forum Chair for the Association for Institutional Research (AIR).  She will begin her term as Associate Forum Chair, a national board position, on May 25, 2011 following the close of the next AIR Forum.  The position is a two-year appointment; in the second year, she will serve as Forum Chair.
The mission of the Association for Institutional Research is to support quality data and decisions for higher education.  The Forum is the premier annual conference for members of the Association. The four-day meeting is the world’s largest gathering of higher education professionals working in institutional research, assessment, planning, and related postsecondary education fields.  The Forum includes more than 450 presentations by colleagues representing all sectors of higher education and an exhibit hall featuring the latest tools and resources to support data use for decision-making.  From networking with peers to workshops and plenary sessions by leading experts in the field, the Forum is the “must attend” event for seasoned and early career professionals.

“I will use my mathematics, computer, and research skills as well as her ability to pay attention to details” to provide leadership for “planning and implementing an unforgettable Forum,” Simpkins said.

Professionally, Simpkins has presented papers at institutional research and computer conferences.  The more recent papers focused on institutional research and its role in institutional effectiveness, planning, evaluation, and assessment.  She is currently a member of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and three of its special interest groups – Traditionally Black Colleges and Universities (TBCU), Southern Association for Institutional Research (SAIR), and Georgia Association for Institutional Research, Planning, Assessment, and Quality (GAIRPAQ).  In AIR, Alice has served on the Nominations Committee and chaired the Ethics Advisory Committee.  Further, she has been a presenter, facilitator, and volunteer.  She has also held leadership positions in each of the special interest groups.

In addition to leadership skills, Simpkins also brings planning and organizational experience from many local community agencies to the role having served on the boards of the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Augusta Chorale.  Further, she currently holds a regional position in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

As an employee of Paine College, Simpkins currently serves as Director of Institutional Research, a position she has held since 1987.  In her almost 39 years as a Paine employee, she has held numerous positions including assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, director of institutional effectiveness and research, director of the Information and Computer Science program, database coordinator for the implementation of the Jenzabar administrative computer system (formerly CMDS Teams Elite), director of the National Youth Sports Program, and director of the Ford Teacher-Scholar program.  Her college service ranges from secretary of the faculty to service as a member of three (3) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ leadership teams.  Further, she has been instrumental in obtaining grants for institutional effectiveness, evaluation, and research; computer and information program development; and a classroom project for statistical understanding.
