Lady Lions Open Season at Voorhees College

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lions Basketball Team will open the 2009-2010 campaign on the road as they pay a visit to the Lady Tigers of Voorhees College in Denmark, SC at 6:00 PM Thursday, November 19, 2009.

The Lady Lions return seven players from the 2008-09 squad, including  from last year’s team is Junior Shanee’ Butler (5’5, Guard, Gary, IN) one of the team’s top returners.  She finished the previous season averaging 11 points per game, dishing out 84 assist, and shooting 77% from the free throw line.   Also returning to this year’s squad are Tiffany Beverly (5’5, Guard, San Pedro, CA), Kenita Harold (5’6, Guard, Ypsilanti, MI) and Natoria Rowland (5’4, Guard, Marion, LA) returns to the scene after rehabbing from a knee injury during the 2008-09 season to round out the seniors.  Juniors Sherita Rayford (5’11, Forward/Guard, Columbus, GA), Terria Davis (5’8, Forward, Detroit, MI) and Sophomores Brittany Pevey (5’9, Forward, Milwaukee, WI) and Jamecia Davis (5’4, Guard, Birmingham, AL). Four freshmen and one transfer finalize the 2009-10 Lady Lions “hoop” squad.

Under the helm of Coach Terence Palmer and Assistant Coach Kisha Lucette, the Lady Lions are looking to improve their 6-21 overall record from last year.  The Lady Lions will open SIAC conference play, Saturday, November 21, 2009 as they take on Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC at 1:00 PM.

The Lady Lions will step on their home court, Thursday, November 28, 2009 as they host Lane College in Carter Gymnasium with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.  

Admission prices for home contest are $10 for adults and $5 for students with I.D.




Former SC State coach and hall of famer Willie Jeffries keynote speaker for Paine's 2nd Annual Athletic Director's Luncheon

(AUGUSTA, GA)- On Friday, November 20, 2009 at 12 Noon, former head football coach of South Carolina State University and hall of famer Willie Jefferies will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2nd Annual Paine College Athletic Director’s Luncheon. The luncheon will take place in the  Warren A. Candler Memorial Library Building on the campus of Paine College.

Willie Jeffries, a native of Union, South Carolina, earned his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling from South Carolina State University. Additionally, he studied at Indiana University. 
Jeffries’ coaching career began in 1960 as assistant coach at Barr Street High School in Lancaster, SC. A head coaching position followed in 1961 at Granard High School in Gaffney, SC where he compiled a six-year 65-7-2 mark, and won three (1964-1966) consecutive state AAA championships.

He began his first tenure at SCSU in 1973, completing an impressive 50-13-4 record in six seasons. Following a hiatus from SCSU, 1978-1989, Jeffries returned to begin his second tenure which spanned 13 years. Jeffries also earned a national title and made three Heritage Bowl appearances after returning to Orangeburg in 1989. During his remarkable 29-year collegiate head-coaching career, which included five-year stints each at Wichita State, where he became the first African-American head football coach of a Division I-A program and Howard University, Jeffries compiled a 179-132-6 record. This record included six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, two national titles, several post-season appearances, and numerous coaching awards. Jeffries also produced a number of players who have distinguished themselves in professional football and other professions as well.

Jeffries left SCSU in 2001, with a winning season. He later became the director of athletic fund-raising at SCSU where he stayed until January 2005 when he accepted the athletic director position at Grambling State University.

During and after his outstanding career he received several honors.  He was inducted into the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He is also a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Hall of Fame. He has also received numerous honors for his community service including the Order of the Silver Crescent, South Carolina’s highest award for outstanding community service, the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian award. A scholarship fund and endowment have been established in his name at SCSU. During the 2002 school year, he was honored by the Black Coaches’ Association (BCA) with a lifetime achievement award and inducted into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame. 

He is a member of several coaching, professional and civic organizations, including the American Football Coaches Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and NCAA Football Rules Committee.

Jeffries remains a committed ambassador for SCSU, the Orangeburg community, South Carolina and the nation.

Paine Volleyball Split in Day One of SIAC Tournament

Frankfort, KY- The Paine College Lady Lions opened up the 2009 SIAC volleyball tournament Wednesday, November 11, 2009 with a win defeating the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College in straight sets (25-18; 25-23; 25-18) at the Exum Center on the campus of Kentucky State University.  All-conference player Victoria Claytor led the offense for the Lady Lions with 13 kills followed by Ashlee Porter who added seven kills in the win.  On the defensive side, Fernisha McMillian and Janae Kearse recorded 15 and 13 digs respectively.  Marquita Josey and Camachio Harris both added 13 assists in the win. 

Later in the day, the Lady Lions fell to the Tigerettes of Benedict College in a tough four sets (22-25; 26-28; 25-23; 24-26). Camachio Harris worked her way around the court with 12 kills, 23 assist, and 9 digs. Victoria Claytor and Michelle Brown recorded double digit kills in the match for the Lady Lions 15 and 12 respectively, while Fernisha McMillian and Janae Kearse combined for 37 digs in the loss. 

Not eliminated from the tournament, but dropping into the loser’s bracket, the Lady Lions will play Stillman College, Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 12 noon. 

Paine Volleyball fall in Season Finale

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lion’s volleyball team took a tough loss to Savannah State University Lady Tigers, Thursday November 05, 2009 in Carter Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lady Lions bring to a close the 2009 regular volleyball season finishing 17-13 overall and 10-6 in the SIAC. 

Freshman, Victoria Claytor led the Lady Lions with a double- double tallying 24 kills and 11 digs. Fellow freshman Camachio Harris,  added 11 kills for the Lady Lions, and recorded 11 assist in the 2-3 (25-12;20-25;25-16; 22-25; 15-17) loss. Sophomore Janae Kearse led the defense with 23 digs, and Junior Marquita Josey assisted the Lady Lions with 29 times.

With the score tied at 15 each in the fifth and final set, the Lady Lions were stung by two errors to end the game.

Bianca Helton led the way for the Lady Tigers with 15 kills, followed by Whitney Bullock recording 14 kills.

The Lady Lions look to recover and prepare for the SIAC volleyball tournament to be held in Frankfort, Kentucky November 11-13, 2009.


Paine Volleyball Wins Conference Match

Augusta, GA- The Paine College volleyball team won their match against SIAC conference opponent, Fort Valley State University, downing the Lady Wildcats 3-0 in Carter Gymnasium Tuesday, October 27, 2009. 

The second meeting of the year for the teams, the Lady Lions swept the Lady Wildcats 3-0 (21-25, 14-25, 22-25) September 24, 2009 in Fort Valley, GA.The Lady Lions wasted no time, taking the first set with a convincing victory 25-10, sets two and three 25-15, and 25- 18 respectively.

Victoria Claytor dominated set two of the match putting down eight of the sets 17 kills, and finishing the match with a total 19 kills and .452 hitting percentage.  In addition, she recorded seven digs and five blocks.  Marquita Josey added five kills, 12 set assists, and led the defense with five block assist.  Camachio Harris followed suit with five kills, 11 set assists, and six digs.

Andrea Stephenson led the Lady Wildcat offense with 14 kills.

The Lady Lions (16-10; 10-5 SIAC) will be back in action this weekend as they travel to North Carolina, making stops in Salisbury on Friday, October 30, 2009 to play Livingstone College, first serve slated for 6:00 PM, and next stopping in Charlotte, Saturday October 31, 2009 to take on Johnson C. Smith University at 11:00 AM.

Paine Lady Lions down Blue Bears of Livingstone College in Women's Volleyball

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lions defeated the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-16) Saturday, October 24, 2009 in Carter Gymnasium.  With the non-conference match-up win, the Lady Lions improve to 15-10.The first match started off a little rocky with an error by the Lady Lions, and the Blue Bears keeping the serve for five points in a row.  

The Lady Lions regrouped and didn’t look back for the remainder of the match.  The Lady Lions put down 31 kills with a hitting percentage of .296 and held the Lady Blue Bears to 20 kills and a hitting percentage of -.13.Freshman Victoria Claytor finished the match with10 kills, followed by Camachio Harris who recorded 7 kills.  Sophomores Janae’ Kearse and Fernisha McMillian picked up double-digit defensive digs, 12 and 10 respectively.  Junior Marquita Josey put up 12 set assists in the victory for the Lady Lions.

Michelle Thompson recorded 9 kills and 8 digs for the Lady Blue Bears in the loss.

Paine College will return to action Tuesday, October 27, 2009 hosting the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University. Tuesday’s game is set for 6:00 PM in Carter Gymnasium on the campus of Paine College.

Lady Lions Win Season Opener

Augusta, GA - The Paine College Lady Lions volleyball team opened up their 2009 season by hosting the Lady Hornets of Allen University Tuesday, September 01, 2009.

With just four returning players from last year’s squad, the Lady Lions took to the court in Carter Gymnasium with confidence and swept the Lady Hornets in three straight sets (25-16, 25-10, 25-18).  Junior Marquita Josey led the offense with 18 assist and sophomore Janae’ Kearse led the defense with eight digs, nine kills, and three service aces.  Freshman Camachio Harris worked her way around the volleyball court for her college debut with seven kills, five assist, eight service aces, and one solo block.  Freshman Victoria Claytor had team highs 11 kills and three solo blocks for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions (1-0) will be back in action Saturday, September 5, 2009 participating in a tri-match with Brewton Parker College and Savannah State University.  First serve will be at 12 noon in Carter Gymnasium. 

The Lady Lions will open up Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, Tuesday, September 8, 2009 hosting Albany State University at 6:00 PM.
