Paine Baseball Team Ready for 2010 Season

Posted by kmay | 02/1/2010 17:43 PM

Augusta, GA-Coming off of their first losing season in 8 years, the 2010 baseball team is once again ready to accept the challenge of being one of the top teams in the SIAC.  The Lions who were SIAC Tournament Champions in 2000 and 2005, are geared up and ready for this season.

INFIELD: Injuries took its toll on last years starters but 1st baseman Carlos Figueroa, 2nd baseman Trey Lariscy, Short Stop Chris Alvarez and Catcher Brandon Dominy are all back to reclaim their starting positions.  Freshman Christian Gaston will handle the 3rd base.  Look for Trey Crain, sophomore, freshman Brandon Banks, Senior Quinton Heath, and transfer sophomore Evan Howard to see plenty of playing time.

OUTFIELD: Centerfielder and senior Alex Humphrey is the only returner.  Freshman Zachary Drummond, Rashad Harris, Jeffery Brown, and Trey Bailey will compete for starting positions.

PITCHERS: All the starters are back from last year’s young staff.  Brad Freeman, Avery McAlpine, and Daniel Wilson will lead the staff.  Look for Evan Howard, Yahvieh Villanova, and Christian Gaston to push for starting spots.  Rounding out the pitching staff will be Carlos Figueroa, Jeffery Brown, and Rashad Harris.

Offensively, the Lions will rely on their team speed and play the small game.  “Pitching and team defense will still be the key to our season,” comments Coach Pete Cardenas.  “If the young pitchers can grow up fast and compliment the starters and we can stay healthy, I believe we can return to being one of the elite teams in this conference.”

The Lions will open their season at Voorhees College, February 1, 2010.  The Lions will be on their home field, February 6, 2010 as they host Bluefield State.  SIAC conference play will begin for the Lions as they host Benedict College Tigers, March 6, 2010.
