Paine College Appoints Coach Willie Adams to Lead Lady Lions

Augusta, GA- Athletic Director, Coach Ronnie Spry, announced today that Coach Willie Adams will lead the Lady Lions Basketball team.  Coach Adams brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in his 14th year at Paine College where he previously served as the assistant basketball coach for the Lions and steered the women’s cross country and track team for over 12 years.

Coach Spry commented, “Adams was an outstanding basketball player and all-around athlete while a student at Paine College. A natural leader, he served as Team Captain and was a member of the Lions Championship team and later garnered the Most Improved Player Award.  His expertise, experience and being familiar with our athletic program will help him to do an outstanding job.”

“I am truly excited to be a part of the Paine College legacy where there is an exceptional basketball history,” said Adams.  “It is my desire to continue to build winning teams on and off the court that will compete successfully in the athletic and academic arenas.”

During his tenure, Adams guided the women’s cross country program from 3rd place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) to 2nd place in 2004.  He coached several players to the All-Conference Team in Cross Country and track & field for several consecutive years.  In 1998, Adams coached freshman Samantha Daniels to the All-Conference team in cross country, and in 1999, Melissa Calhoun to the All-Conference Awards; and Casheba Ellis All-Conference in 2009.

In 2000 through 2002, Adams coached Clensy Warren (Javelin); LaTasha Russell (Discus); and the 4 X 100 Relay and 4 X 400 Relay teams to All-Conference awards in track and field.  He also coached Savoyia Baerrett to a Conference Championship in the Javelin (2005-2006) and Lakeisha Bell four straight years to the High Jump Championship (2006-2009).  In 1999 and 2002, Adams played an integral role in assisting the Men’s Basketball Championship teams.

A native of Brunswick, Georgia, Adams was an outstanding athlete at Brunswick High School where he lettered four years in basketball and football.  While at Brunswick High School, he also played baseball.  After graduating from high school, Adams attended Lake City Community College, Lake City, Florida; and later transferred to Paine College where he played basketball from 1992-1994. 

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an Emphasis in Criminology from Paine College in 1996 and a Masters of Education Degree from Troy University in 2005.  Adams is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Black Coaches and Administrators Association.  He is married to CeKisha Adams.

Paine Softball Pitcher named to All-Tournament Team

Jasper, AL- E. Simone Kennedy was named to the 2010 SIAC Softball Crossover Tournament team.

Kennedy is a sophomore from Augusta, Georgia and the starting pitcher for the Lady Lions Softball team.

The SIAC softball crossover was held in Jasper, Alabama March 18, 19, and 20, 2010. The crossover gives the schools located on the East Side of the Conference: Albany State University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, and West Side: Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Stillman College, and Tuskegee University an opportunity to compete against each other before the SIAC Softball Tournament.

The Lady Lions will return to softball action this weekend as they travel to Albany, Georgia to face Albany State University, Saturday, March 27, 2010 and make a stop in Fort Valley, Georgia Sunday, March 28, 2010 to take on Fort Valley State University.

Home softball action will resume, Monday April 5, 2010 as the Lady Lions host Claflin University. The game is scheduled for 2:00 PM, and will be played at Lucy C. Laney High School stadium.

 

Sovonia Green Field Athlete of the Week

Tucker, GA-Paine College’s Sovonia Green was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Track Top Performer of the week.

The sophomore from Groveland,Florida had a mark of 10.64m in the shot put throw at the FAMU Relays held March 12-14, 2010 in Tallahassee, FL.

The Paine College Track & Field teams will return to action this weekend, March 26-27 at the Winthrop Asics Relays in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The Lady Lions are coached by Willie Adams and the Lions are coached by Carlos McNair.

 

Lady Lions Softball Open Home Season

Augusta,GA- The Paine College Lady Lions will open their home softball season, today, Sunday March 14, 2010 as they host the Lady Pantherettes of Clark Atlanta University. 

The double-header will begin at 2:00 PM and will be played at Lucy C. Laney High stadium.

The SIAC conference match-up is the first of this season. 

The Lady Lions are coached by Terence Palmer, Zack Howard,Head Assistant Coach, and Kisha Lucette Assistant Coach.

Lions Lose by Four, End Season

Atlanta, GA- Three Lions scored in double figures, Tuesday March 2, 2010, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Rams of Albany State University.  With this being the third meeting for the Lions and Rams in the 2009-2010 basketball season, the Lions were sure the third time would be the charm.  The Lions lost once again and ended the 2009-10 basketball season at the 77th SIAC Basketball tournament held at Forbes Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Julian English led the way for the Lions with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Marcus McDaniel would follow with 14 points, and second-team All-Conference member Geno Green added 13 points in the 66-62 loss.

The Lions shot 42 percent from the field, outrebounded the Rams 42-27, but the Rams got 22 of their 66 points from the charity stripe with 31 attempts.  The Lions got just 13 attempts at the free throw line, and converted on 11.

With the loss, the Lions end their season 8-20 overall and 8-16 SIAC Conference.

Turett O'Neal led for the Rams with 19 points.

Lady Lions Season Ends

Atlanta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lions ended their 2009-2010 Basketball season, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia at the 77th SIAC Tournament.

The Lady Lions opened up the tournament facing Stillman College Lady Tigers, and held the lead up until the seven minute mark, and then a basket by the Lady Tigers tied the game.   The Lady Lions were not able to recover before halftime, and went into the locker room with a 10 point deficit (31-21).

Terria Davis was the lone Lady Lion to score in double figures with 10 points.  Shanee’ Butler scored 9 points, and Jasmine Faulkner scored 8 points.

With the loss, the Lady Lions end their season with a 6-20 overall record, and 5-18 in the SIAC.

Head Coach Terence Palmer stated “Honestly, I was disappointed this season, only one team will be happy in the end. It’s bigger than just one game. They did better towards the end which I’m happy about, but it was a disappointment.” “Next season my main focus is to find a point guard to give us more experience and leadership from up top.”

Alecia Young led for the Lady Tigers with 19 points.

The 77th Annual SIAC Tournament is being held at Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.  The tournament will run through Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Paine Baseball to Host Davis & Elkins Senators

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lions Baseball team will be hosting the Senators of Davis & Elkins College out of West Virginia, Saturday, February 27, 2010 and Sunday, February 28, 2010.

The double-header on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 Noon, and the single game on Sunday, is also scheduled for noon.

The Lions will open up SIAC conference play Saturday, March 6, 2010 as they host Benedict College Tigers in a double-header.  The first-pitch is scheduled for 12:00 Noon. (Pictured-Senior Carlos Fiqueroa)

Paine Baseball to Face Augusta State Jaguars

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lions Baseball Team will be playing Augusta State University Jaguars, Friday, February 19, 2010.

The Lions opened up their season on the road at Voorhees College, in Denmark, South Carolina.

Tonight’s (Friday) game will be held at Lake Olmstead Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM.

The Lions and Jaguars will meet again tomorrow, Saturday February 20, 2010 at Lake Olmstead Stadium with game time scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Lady Lions Fall to the Lady Wilcats

Fort Valley, GA- Three Lady Lions scored double digits, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Lions fell to the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University.  Antionette McPhail led all scorers with 15 points, Areyal LeDeatte scored 11 points, and Shanee Butler score 10 points in the 50-58 loss, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 in Fort Valley, Georgia.

The Lady Lions gave the Lady Wildcats a run for their money, as they rebounded from a 16 point (35-19) halftime deficit.  The Lady Lions came out of the locker-room, and scored seven points to cut the lead to 9 points. 

A layup by Terria Davis (pictured) at the two minute mark cut the Wildcat lead to one (49-48). With a missed jumper by the Wildcats Jasmine Birdsong and a rebound by Paine’s Antionette McPhail, the Lady Lions had the opportunity to take the lead, but an offensive foul gave the Lady Wildcats possession with 1:25 left in the game.

The Lady Lions got into foul trouble, and the Lady Wildcats extended the lead to 56-48, before the Lady Lions were able to score again.

With the loss, the Lady Lions fall 5-18 overall, and 4-16 SIAC.

Takesha Riggs led the way for Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats with 12 points, 2 blocks, and 5 steals.
 
The Lady Lions will be back in action, Thursday, February 18, 2010 as they face the Lady Rams of Albany State University in Albany, Georgia.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Homecoming 2010 Cancellations

Due to the inclement weather conditions in the Central Savannah River Area, the Paine College Homecoming Parade scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010 will be canceled.  

The following Homecoming events are still scheduled for the weekend. Please see the list of the following events:

Paine College Homecoming Game--2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the T.W. Josey High School Gymnasium
