Lions Beat the Dragons

Jackson, TN- Three Lions scored in double figures against the Lane College Dragons, Saturday November 27, 2010 as the Lions picked up their first win of the 2010-2011 season.

Senior guard Thomas Broughton (pictured) led all scorers for the Lions with 15 points; followed by sophomore Mario Jordan with 14 points, and junior Geno Green added 10 points and seven rebounds in the 61-57 victory.

Freshman Marshall McFadden made an impressive showing, with seven points, three steals, and three assist for the Lions.

The Lions shot 39.3% in the first half, converting 11 of 28 field goals, 35% second half and a total of 37.5% for the game. 

With the win, the Lions improve to 1-1; 1-1 SIAC, and will take on Kentucky State University, Monday, November 29, 2010 at 7:30 PM in Frankfort, KY.

Lady Lions Drops One to Lane

Jackson, TN-  The Paine College Lady Lions traveled to Jackson, TN, to face Lane College Lady Dragons, Saturday, November 27, 2010.  Freshman guard, Baiesha Johnson posted the first points of the competition with a tip from sophomore forward, Antionette McPhail as the Lady Lions gained possession of the jump-ball. The Lady Dragons converted on three baskets, making the score 7-2.  Gaining momentum, the Lady Dragons maintained the lead, and with 9:26 left in the first half, the score was 22-6.

The Lady Lions kept pressing forward, and a layup and foul shot by sophomore Michele Brown helped the Lady Lions continue to cut the Lady Dragons’  lead, and go into the locker rooms down by just six points (24-30). 

Coming out at the half, the Lady Lions, Antionette McPhail scored six straight points to tie the game 30-30, including two buckets, and two foul shots, before the Lady Dragons were able to score in the second half. 

A three pointer from Alice Holmes brought the Lady Lions within one point, then a steal by freshman Hint Denson led to a jumper by Antionette McPhail, and the Lady Lions took the lead(37-36) for the first time in the game since the jump ball in the first half.  The Lady Lions were able to maintain the lead until the 11:00 mark, and a layup by Lane’s Terryn Offiong gave them the lead (47-46) and the Lady Lions would not recover to close out the game.

Head Coach Willie Adams says  “we have got to learn to play with the lead, without the lead, and close out the games.”

The Lady Lions were led Alice Holmes, with 16 points, Antionette McPhail (pictured) posted her second double-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and Jasmine Faulkner added 9 points in her first debut of the 2010-2011 season.

With the 58-64 loss , the Lady Lions fall to 0-3;0-2 SIAC on the season. The Lady Lions will be face Kentucky State University, Monday, November 29, 2010 in Frankfort, KY, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Lady Lions Basketball Open 2010-2011 Season

Augusta, GA-  The Paine College Lady Lions will open up their 2010-2011 basketball  season, Monday, November 15, 2010 as they travel to Denmark South Carolina to take on Voorhees College at 6:00 PM. 

This season should be a new adventure, as Coach Willie Adams makes his debut as Head Women’s basketball coach, after coaching 14 seasons as assistant men’s basketball coach.  Assisting Adams will be Kisha Lucette and Alfred Beard.

Returning to the line-up for the Lady Lions include one senior, guard Shanee’ Butler, one junior, forward Brittany Pevey, four sophomores: guards Jasmine Faulkner and Skkyiesha Bing, forward/guard Antionette McPhail, and forward, Michelle Brown.  The Lady Lions have five newcomers: freshman guards, Hint Denson and Baiesha Johnson, freshman center, Tyra Jackson, and two transfer guards, junior Kiara Farley and senior Alice Holmes.   Senior Terria Davis will be sitting out to nurse an injury for the first part of the season.

The Lady Lions closed out the 2009-2010 season with a loss in the SIAC basketball tournament, falling to Stillman College 50-65, and ending with a 6-20 overall record, 5-17 SIAC conference record.

The Lady Lions will open conference play, Saturday November 20, 2010 as they travel to Orangeburg, SC to take on Claflin University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Lady Lions Earn SIAC All-Conference Volleyball Honors

Augusta, GA- The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announces the 2010 Volleyball All-Conference Teams as selected by the SIAC Volleyball Coaches Association.

Paine College Lady Lions volleyball team members Victoria Claytor and Fernisha McMillian received SIAC All-Conference honors, Wednesday evening, November 10, 2010. The honors were received at the SIAC volleyball banquet held on the campus of Kentucky State University.

Victoria Claytor (pictured left) was named to the second team all-conference team. In addition, the sophomore outside hitter was named SIAC Defensive Player of the Year.  Victoria led the Lady Lions in kills with 390 kills, 50 service aces, and 186 digs for the 2010 year.

Meanwhile, teammate Fernisha McMillian (pictured right) was named Libero for the first team all conference team.  The defensive player recorded 415 digs this year.

The 2010 SIAC All-conference team is led by Benedict senior Melinda Bastian. Bastian, a three-time all-conference first team selection, tied for the conference lead with 343 kills while posting a hitting percentage of .343. The 5-10 native of Nassau, Bahamas also added 77 digs, 37 total blocks, and 24 service aces. For her efforts, she was named 2010 SIAC Most Valuable Player. She was also named Offensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

The Lady Lions traveled to Frankfort, KY to play in the SIAC Volleyball Tournament, and won two games out of four in the double elimination competition.  First day of the competitions, the Lady Lions opened up the tournament defeating Lane College in straight sets (25-14; 25-9; 25-11).  Then the Lady Lions had to face the #1 seed in the East Division, Claflin University, but fell short in a very competitive match (23-25; 22-25; 21-25). 

On Thursday, November 11, 2010  the Lady Lions would start out with a win over Miles College (25-13; 25-12; 25-14), but the 2010 season would come to an end as the  Lady Lions lost a grueling match in 5 sets to Stillman College (19-25;25-18; 25-16; 10-25; 8-15.)  With the loss, the Lady Lions were eliminated from the 2010 SIAC volleyball tournament, and end the season with a 17-15 overall record, and 7-9 SIAC conference record.

Lady Lions to Compete in SIAC Volleyball Tournament

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lions open up a “new” season, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 in Frankfort, KY as they compete for the 2010 SIAC Volleyball Championship hosted by Kentucky State University.

Participating in the first game of the day, the Lady Lions, 5th Seed on the East will take on the 6th seed on the West, Lane College at 10:00 AM. The winner of the game will then take on the #1 seed on the East, Claflin University.

The Lady Lions wrapped up their 2010 regular season Thursday, November 4, 2010 in Carter Gymnasium as the lost a very competitive match to Savannah State University in three straight sets (22-25, 19-25, 24-26).

The Lady Lions, coached by Selina B. Kohn and assisted by Zack Howard will go into the tournament with a 15-13 overall record, and 7-9 SIAC conference record.

Lady Lions Cross Country Team Finish in Top Five

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lady Lions Cross Country team finished their 2010 season with a fifth place finish at the  SIAC conference meet, Friday, November 5, 2010 in Jonesboro, GA.

Each of the Lady Lions completed the 5k course in under 25 minutes.  Casheba Ellis ran the 5k course in 21:30.18, finishing 11th place, Elithia Gibson, 22:34.16, 19th place and Corie Coleman 22:54.10 would take the 20th spot.

Antionette McPhail covered the course in 23:33.82, Baiesha Johnson 23:51.24, Hint Denson 24:02.39, and Lasheba Ellis with a time of 24:47.9, coming in 46th place out of 69 runners.

“I am very impressed with my team, states Head Coach Willie Adams.  When I first started coaching cross country, my first runner would finish the race in about 24 minutes, now my entire team can complete a race in 24 minutes.”

The Lady Lions had a very impressive season.  For the first time in the history of the PC invitational, the Lady Lions took first place and two second place finishes for the 2010 year, and received a total of nine medals.  Juniors Casheba Ellis and Elithia Gibson (pictured) received medals for finishing in the top ten runners in several cross country meets this year. 

“I would like to thank the Lady Lions for their hard work this season, and look forward to preparing for the 2011 Cross Country season, states Adams.

Lady Lions Volleyball Closes 2010 Season in Carter Gymnasium

Augusta, GA-  The Paine College Lady Lions volleyball team will closeout the regular season, Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 6:00 PM as they host Savannah State University in Carter Gymnasium.  Paine Lady Lions enter the contest with a 15-12 overall record.

This game will also serve as senior night, as the Lady Lions honor Marquita Josey(pictured) for four years of service to Paine College as a student athlete. 

A native of Forsyth, Georgia, Marquita is the daughter of Anessa Moore and John W. Josey.  She is a 2007 graduate of Mary Persons High School, majoring in English. Marquita plays in the position of outside hitter and setter for the Lady Lions, and is also a member of the Lady Lions Softball team.

The Lady Lions will be traveling to Frankfort, Kentucky to participate in the SIAC Volleyball tournament November 10-12, 2010.

Paine Volleyball to Host Benedict College

Augusta, GA-  The Paine College Lady Lions Volleyball Team will be hosting Benedict College Lady Tigers, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 in Carter Gymnasium at 6:00 PM. 

This game will be the final SIAC regular season conference game of the year. 

The Lady Lions will play their final game of the year, Thursday, November 4, 2010, as they host Savannah State University with first serve scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Kearse SIAC Defender of the Week Again

Augusta, GA- For the second time this season, Paine College Lady Lion Janae’ Kearse has been named SIAC Volleyball Defender of the week.

Kearse finished the week with 70 digs, and 2 blocks in four matches for the Lady Lions.  The junior, Orangeburg, SC native also contributed 22 kills, 11 service aces, and three assists. 

In addition to playing in the defensive specialist position for the Lady Lions, Janae’ is also a powerful outside hitter. 

Kearse and the Lady Lions went 4-0 for the nominating period, with wins over Voorhees College twice, Morris College, and Edward Waters College.

Paine Alumni Return to the Baseball Field

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Lion’s baseball team hosted their first annual alumni baseball game Sunday, October 24, 2010 on the Paine College campus.

The baseball game provided the opportunity for former Paine College Lions to interact with current players, families, and fans.  Alumnus provided encouragement and words of advice to the current Lions, and the game also gave the guys a taste of what they can expect for the upcoming season.

The Lions look forward to the annual alumni game being a successful event, and see the game as an opportunity to bring together supporters for Paine’s athletes and for Paine College. 

The former Lions (pictured) were able to show their fans that they still have what it takes, as they claim bragging rights for  "passing the hit stick" the majority of the game.

The Lions will also be hosting their annual purple and white game, Saturday October 30, 2010 at 1:00 PM on the Lions field.
