Paine College Community mourns the loss of Rev. Dr. Lewis  W. Jay, '48

Dr. George C. Bradley and the Paine College Community join bishops and worshippers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and other higher education institutions in mourning the loss of a respected leader in the greater faith community, Rev. Dr. Lewis W. Jay, '48, Retired Minister of the Georgia North Region, 6th Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Conference. He will forever be recognized for his dedication, leadership and excellence in religious ministry.

Dr. Jay had 65 years of experience in religious ministry. He excelled in managing finances, overseeing community activities and advocating for senior citizens and single-parent families. He placed emphasis on the importance of promoting education, seeking knowledge and pursuing one's goals with discipline, purpose and a sense of direction. Prior to founding Tree of Life Deliverance Church, Inc., Dr. Jay was an ordained clergyman with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for 51 years and worked as a minister and educational administrator. He attributed his success to being dedicated and goal-oriented.

Dr. Jay received his Doctoral Degree in Human Services from Union Seminary at Birmingham, Alabama and his Master's Degree in Education from Atlanta University in 1948. He graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts and studied Theological Studies at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. His professional affiliations include the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Concerned Black Clergy, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Fellowship of United Methodist of Metropolitan Atlanta.

Together, Dr. Jay and his wife, Hattie Elizabeth Barnes, a Paine College alumna, shared three children, six grandchildren and a great grandchild.

SIAC Basketball names Mario Jordan Player of the Week

ATLANTA—Paine College junior Mario Jordan and Lane College junior Brittany Peters have been named SIAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week, respectively, while Paine College freshman Kedric Taylor has been named SIAC Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week and Clark Atlanta University freshman Denisea Law has been named SIAC Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week.

Jordan, a native of Sandersville, GA, averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in two games, earning his second player of the week honor this season. Defensively, the 5-11, 165-pound guard also averaged 3.5 steals, including a game-high five in a win over Clark Atlanta, while also averaging 2.5 assists per game to help lead the Lions to a 2-0 record for the week which also includes a win over conference-foe Miles. Jordan and the Lions currently sit atop the SIAC with a 5-0 record in conference play.

Peters, a native of Columbus, OH, had 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in her first game as a Lady Dragon. Defensively, the 5-7 guard also totaled two steals and one block in their only game of the week, a 75-73 loss to Kentucky State.

Taylor, a native of Orlando, FL, had a big week for the Lions, averaging 15 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and a block in two games. The 6-0, 175-pound freshman, who attended Evans High School, recorded his first career triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in an 82-67 win over Miles.

Law, a native of Miami, FL, had 13 points and four rebounds for the Lady Panthers. The 5-7 freshman guard, who attended Northwestern High School, also had one assist and one steal while helping Clark Atlanta to a 72-63 win over Paine to move to 2-1 in the SIAC.

Paine College Community displays Service for Holiday Season

(Augusta, GA)-As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, families find it harder and harder to provide. Non-profit organizations are also feeling the economic shift. But the efforts of Paine College employees helped ease the burden by providing two local non-profit organizations with the opportunity to further assist the many families that rely on them. 

St. Stephen’s Ministry of Augusta, Inc. was one of the organizations that benefited from the College's employee generosity. St. Stephen's Ministry of Augusta, Inc. is an organization dedicated to providing housing for persons with HIV/AIDS who are low income or homeless. The mission of this program is to facilitate independence, dignity, and well being through safe, affordable, and appropriate housing. In addition, we provide services to homeless and low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS and the affected persons in their lives.  

"We thank the employees of Paine College because they've provided us with necessities. Everything we received was greatly needed," said Kevin Brooks, Case Manager at Stephen's Ministry of Augusta Inc. 

The faculty and staff of Paine College also contributed greatly to three families from Safehomes of Augusta, which is an organization that is committed to ending domestic violence in our community as well as in the lives of individuals. Its mission is to transform victims of domestic violence into survivors. In 1983, the first SafeHomes shelter was opened. A total of 80 women were helped that year. By 1985, the number had grown to more than 500 women. Today, Safehomes of Augusta impacts the lives of more than 1000 women and children each year.  

"Paine College has stepped up in a big way this holiday season. "It is a true blessing and it is something we look forward to each year," said Sharon Barber, Financial/ Operations Manager at Safehomes of Augusta. "The great thing about Paine College is that we know we can count on them for support and they've done an outstanding job supporting us for four years."

The generosity of the faculty and staff speaks to the College's core value, "service". The faculty and staff opt to give to charity during the College's annual holiday social hosted by Drs. George and Tina Bradley instead of exchanging gifts between one another. This tradition displays the institution’s history and commitment to service to the community, nation and the world.

Paine College To Celebrate World AIDS Day With Annual Candlelight Walk

(Augusta, GA)- Paine College will host several events for World AIDS Day. On November 30, the College will host a forum “The People vs. HIV” in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel at 6:30 p.m. The College will also host an opening ceremony for World AIDS Day on December 1 in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel at 6:30 p.m. The keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Rev. Dr. Charles E. Goodman, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church. 

The Annual World AIDS Day Walk will take place on December 3 at 10:00AM. 

The Paine College and CSRA Community will engage in events throughout the week to bring awareness about the AIDS epidemic.

Paine College International English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta Marks 30th Anniversary

(Augusta, GA)- The Paine College Sigma Omicron chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society will be recognized for 30 years of distinctive service in higher education and quality in the fields of English. Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. A member of the Association of College Honor Societies, Sigma Tau Delta was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

The academic year 2011-2012 marks the 30th anniversary founding of Paine College’s Sigma Omicron chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. The chapter will be congratulated for its contribution towards the legacy of quality. Sigma Tau Delta's Board of Directors will recognize the chapter with a special plaque at the 2012 International Convention, February 29-March 3, 2012, in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Dr. Emily Allen Williams, Chapter Sponsor and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, said, “The Sigma Omicron chapter members and I are pleased with this recognition. We realize how important tradition has been to our present success.  This recognition serves as a catalyst to increased participation in Sigma Tau Delta of Paine College students and faculty by attaining to the highest academic standards through an articulation of the importance of linguistic and literary studies.”

With over 800 active chapters located in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and the Caribbean, there are more than 1,000 Faculty Sponsors, and approximately 9,000 members inducted annually.

"Supporting and maintaining a chapter for this length of time is a notable achievement, and you can be proud- as are we- of your participation in the long history of the Sigma Omicron Chapter's involvement with the International English Honor Society, " said William C. Johnson, executive director of International English Honor Society. 

Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.

Paine College Drama Department presents Black Nativity Remix on Nov. 10th & Nov. 11th

(Augusta, GA_- The Paine College Drama Department will present The Black Nativity Remix on Thursday, November 10 and Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel's Odeum. The event is open to the public. General admission tickets are $5 and student tickets are $2 with a valid I.D. 

The Black Nativity Remix, an original drama with music written by local Paine College professor Dr. Don Cleary and Senior Jennifer Branch.  The production was inspired by the well-known Black Nativity play written by Langston Hughes and is an interesting modern day concept to the timeless nativity story. 

It’s set in the middle of Harlem, NY in an alley where the birth of Christ seems to be the least likely of places for such incidents to happen. To assist in bringing this remixed tale to life the production has an all star cast of hard working Paineites. Carl Johnson is returning to the Paine College stage to play the role of Joseph while Shavonna Martin, freshman Paineite, hits the Paine College stage for the first time as Mary. The supporting roles of the “Wise Ones,” who search to find the baby Jesus with the help of a GPS, are played by senior drama major Corie Coleman, sophomore Chris Alexander, and junior Roddy McDowell. This production is one of several musicals Paine has seen since Dr Cleary’s arrival ten years ago.  

This year is the first year to feature Paine Colleges' own Dancers of David dance team. This production includes efforts from various Greek members on campus and students from many different organizations. One can honestly say that this year's production has pulled on some of the most rare and treasured talents from all over Paine.

 

About Don Cleary

Don Cleary’s entrance into theatre began directing church and community theatre musicals, and he went on to study graduate acting and playwriting while earning a Ph.D. in Fine Arts at Ohio University.   He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Drama at Paine College, where he teaches courses in drama and coordinates the undergraduate drama program.  He also served also as Coordinator for Mass Communications from 2001-2009.   Dr. Cleary not only directs Drama Department productions, but serves “out of necessity” as his own scene/light/sound designer and technical director. Past Paine productions include: Ain’t Misbehaivin, The Piano Lesson, For Colored Girls ...,  Colored People’s Time,  Mirrors,  A Raisin In the Sun, Blue, Antigone,  The Colored Museum, The Day of Absence and Mahalia.  Previously, Dr. Cleary served as musical director for community and university productions which include Fame, Working, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Gollywhoppers, and Ama and the White Crain.   His playwriting prowess led to having one of his plays having been accepted for a professional reading by The Director’s Company of New York City and his recently completed full length play, The Frank Yerby Story, is under consideration by Bepop Collective, a theatre company in Harlem (NYC).  He serves as a Regional Responder for the Southeast Region for the American College Theatre Festival and has served the Georgia Theatre Conference as Treasurer and Community Theatre Division, Vice Chair.  Cleary's greatest successes are his students—students who have succeed at SETC screening auditions, completed internships at Yale School of Drama, been accepted into the prestigious Williamstown Festival, Savannah College of Art and Design  graduate acting program, and the American Music and Drama Academy.

About Jennifer Branch

Co-writer and director of Black Nativity Remix, Jennifer brings a refreshing unorthodox approach to this new twist of a classic. Poet and mother of the cast member “baby Jesus,” Jennifer offers a wisdom and method that could have only been cultivated by God and a genuine love for theatre. As a senior at Paine, Branch has her “eye’s on the prize” of graduation and in making her mark as a notable actor and director.  At Paine, Branch played the lead as Mrs. Stevenson in Sorry, Wrong Number, as director for The Chip Woman's Fortune, and as a founding member and past President of the Drama Club.  She recently beat out 150 + other actors in screening auditions to advance to the Southeastern Theatre Conference where she will compete for jobs in theatre this Spring.  As a future actress, director and author, Branch hopes to not only make her mark in the theatre world but also plans to support Paine's Drama Department that has helped mold her talents into a more perfected craft. As director of this production, she continues to put God first,  and when she thinks about the nativity story, she remembers that when God puts his hand on something, he’ll always take care of it, no matter how hard it may seem.

About Natasha Gallop

Music Director, Stage manager, and actor for Black Nativity Remix-- a native of New Jersey and a graduating senior--Natasha Gallop is more than excited about this original piece written and performed by “some of the best characters at Paine”. This will be yet another time Natasha hits the Paine College stage. Past roles include The Lady in Blue in Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls…., Nell in Ain't Misbehavin, and she served as Director for last Fall's production of Zora Neal Hurston's Color Struck.  She recently scored in the top 11% of actors in the SETC professional screening auditions at the Georgia Theatre Conference and will this Spring compete for theatre jobs against other actors  throughout the Southeast.  This senior is shouting to the world “Paine College is here and we are the future” as she encourages her colleagues to make their mark where ever they are and to always remember Paine in their progress. Wearing many hats in this production, she believes in the message and knows the community will be touched.

Paine College host 2011 Harlem Renaissance Conference: Rainbows of Artistry: Dancers, Divas, Actors and Writers of the Harlem Renaissance

(Augusta, GA)- Paine College will host the 2011 Harlem Renaissance Conference: Rainbows of Artistry: Dancers, Divas, Actors and Writers of the Harlem Renaissance.  The conference will begin on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, offering four Pre-Conference Workshops, which will be conducted by educators Hazel Arnett Ervin and Ruthe T. Sheffey; children’s writer Jordan Trent; and local Augusta artist Malaika Favorite.  The conference sessions will take place in the Candler Memorial Library Building Conference Center. 

Demonstrated in the workshops, which are open to the public, especially secondary school teachers, will be African American literary traditions, which might influence pedagogical practices and strategies when teaching and shaping creative and critical thinking.  The conference will end on Friday, November 11, 2011, following two days of scholarly sessions, art exhibitions, and a dramatic presentation. 

College professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students who are traveling from within Georgia and from New Orleans, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York, and China will attend this year’s conference.

In 2002, a group of English faculty at Paine College began an annual conference to pay tribute to Harlem Renaissance artists, writers, and musicians.  From 1919 until 1935, the Harlem literary movement was an unprecedented collaboration of artists, writers, and musicians who converged upon Harlem and created a corpus of arts and letters which (1) portrayed the complexity of the African American experience, following the Reconstruction era in America, and (2) provided the means of resistance to attacks upon African American intellect and humanity. The Harlem period is famously associated with persons such as James Weldon Johnson, W. E. B. Du Bois, Jean Toomer, Alain Locke, Langston Hughes, Claude Mckay, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Aaron Douglas, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington; it also produced lesser known writers, artists, and musicians such as Gwendolyn Bennett, Marita A. Bonner, Helene Johnson, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, Fletcher Henderson, Eubie Blake, and even younger literary artist Sterling Brown whose reputation would eventually eclipse his poetic beginnings in Harlem.

As an historical period and a critical literary movement of the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance fostered for the African American community a socio-cultural awakening and a black poetics, which, according to Alain Locke, marked “a new psychology” of the “New Negro” in American society. It is this historical period and critical literary movement in American and African American history which Paine College remembers and celebrates each year.

William T. White to serve as keynote speaker for BEEP Week Assembly

(Augusta, GA)- William T. White IV will serve as keynote speaker as the Department of Business Administration host Black Executive Exchange Program. The assembly program will take place on Wednesday,October 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. 

The Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) is a voluntary partnership between the NUL, corporate America, government, non-profits, and other institutions to loan African-American executives to participating colleges as "Visiting Professors." Visiting Professors lecture in credit-bearing courses that correspond to their industries and participate in other BEEP-related activities such as networking sessions, workshops and mock job interviews.

About William T. White IV 

White has assumed the risk of owning and operating his own business.  Born an entrepreneur he was formally introduced to the world of business ownership in 1992 as a member of the South West Atlanta Youth Business Organization (SWAYBO). While apart of this group White created a religious and inspirational t-shirt company.   He later served as the president of SWAYBO and led the effort to take the group to Ghana and Senegal, West Africa.  

After graduating high school in 1998, he earned the Outstanding Georgia Citizen and the Outstanding Leadership awards by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.  He then decided to attend Hampton University and graduated with honors with a degree in Entrepreneurship. While at Hampton he was accepted in the Inroads program and subsequently interned at Bank of America and Georgia Pacific.  While interning at Bank of America he analyzed unsecured loan root causes and reduced unsecured loan amounts from 1.4 to 1.2 million dollars in the east Atlanta region. 

At Georgia Pacific, White worked in the procurement department and participated in supplier negations, director meeting and online supplier auctions.  His internship culminated with a presentation at a conference sponsored by the National Association of Purchasing Managers on supplier diversity strategies.   After graduating, White worked for Johnson and Johnson as a Safety and Environmental Analyst and then later as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative.   After a 4 -year stent in corporate America he decided to leave and formally start his own company, Thomas Investments, a full service real estate investment company, that to date has purchased and sold more than a million dollars worth or real estate.  Two years later White established a second company, Thomas Vending Group.  Most recently he has partnered to create an inventions company focused on car safety equipment called Safety First Solutions. The company’s first product was launched in May 2011 and it is called the Driver’s Alert. 

White is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Prince Hall Shrine.  He currently volunteers his time at the South West Atlanta Youth Business Organization and at the First African Church Young Men’s Rites of Passage Program.  He believes that achievement, service and a strong since of your history are the keys to success.

LaShon Sturgis, 02 to receive the Herbert W. Nickens Award

(Augusta, GA)- The Association of American Medical Colleges announced the recipients of the Herbert W. Nickens faculty fellowship and medical student scholarships.  Among the recipients is LaShon Cherry Sturgis, '02. She will receive the Herbert W. Nickens Award on Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. The winners will receive their awards at the Future Leaders of Academic Medicine session. 

The award is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to promoting justice in medical education and health care equities for people in the United States.  Dr. Nickens believed that a multidisciplinary approach is needed to address inequities in health. Because of this, nominees may come from a wide range of fields, including medicine, dentistry, education, law, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social and behavioral sciences.

This is a tremendous recognition for Sturgis and her work over the years at Paine College, Georgia Health Science University/ Medical College of Georgia.
 
 “This award is a huge honor and a culmination of the things I’ve accomplished over the years, “ she said. “You can open a lot of doors by working hard and giving back. I encourage others to work hard and give back to help make things easier for others that will follow in their footsteps.”

This year's faculty fellowship recipient is Tumaini Coker, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He will receive $15,000 to support academic and professional activities.

The $5,000 student scholarships will go to Monique Chambers, University of California, Davis School of Medicine; Toussaint Mears-Clarke, University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences, The Pritzker School of Medicine; Teresa K. L. Schiff, University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine; LaShon Sturgis, Ph.D., Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University; and Martha Tesfalul, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Construction for Paine College Health Education Activities Learning (HEAL) Complex under way

(Augusta, GA)- This week, construction on the new multi-million Paine College Health Education Activities Learning Complex (HEAL) Complex commenced.

The facility will become the new home for the Paine College Athletic Program. This contemporary structure will house classrooms, laboratories, meeting and conference rooms, and a health and wellness facility. Accessible to the community, the HEAL Complex will host the College's intercollegiate competitions in the new 2,400 seat arena. The facility is expected to be complete within a 12-month time frame.

"The HEAL Complex has the capacity to transform campus life, improve student and faculty retention, increase enrollment and serve as the hub for collaboration that will address many of the contemporary health and wellness related issues that are facing the community," said Brandon Brown, Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
