SRR top executive offers invaluable advice to Paine students

(AIKEN, S.C)--Amid a successful 30-year career focused largely on positive contributions to the nuclear industry, Dave Olson knows when it’s time to return a favor.

 

As Operations and Deputy Project Manager with Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS), Olson is personally determined to “give back” by helping today’s college students become tomorrow’s competent leaders in his industry and others.

 

Building upon the extensive corporate leadership training and personal experiences he has been given by URS, his corporate employer, Olson uses what he describes as a two-pronged process to reach the students by visiting colleges in South Carolina and Georgia within proximity to SRS on his personal time. 

 

Initially, he gives a presentation to students and reveals how his rural Midwestern, farm-belt origins have positively spurred his career success. His presentation includes a poignant message called “Been There – Done That, but Not Done Yet.” 

 

Olson’s message enlightens students on his early career, supported with a shiny new Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota.

 

He also chronicles various scenarios surrounding his post-collegiate career, moves that were both advantageous and detrimental in his ultimate quest to become a successful executive, all of them teaching him life lessons that would serve him well in the future.

 

A day later, he welcomes one-on-one visits with students to personally discuss their career choices and other relevant factors in their readiness to enter the workforce and be significant life contributors.

 

 

As a father of three college-aged sons, one a recent graduate, Olson says his reasons for wanting to “give back” stem from his recent observations of the current crop of college students.

 

“My sons have a lot to do with this. I’ve noticed that many from their generation are lacking in certain areas. Too many of today’s young graduates are gifted academically, but have short-comings in other important arenas of life,” he said.

 

Olson, who also has a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Augusta State University, suggests that students take courses such as basic economics, speech communications and technical writing to help develop so-called “soft skills.” 

 

Sports also play a role, according to the SRR Executive.

 

Olson's time as a player-coach of intramural teams in college led to 17 years of youth basketball coaching, a foundation that causes him to strongly urge students to participate in team sports to learn the importance and value of teamwork. 

 

Olson has visited South Carolina institutions, such as South Carolina State University, Claflin University, Allen University, Benedict College, Voorhees College, Clemson University and the University of South Carolina.

 

In Georgia, he has visited Augusta State University and Augusta’s Paine College.

 

He is even extending his career advice to high school students with a recent visit to the South Carolina Governor's School of Science and Math in Hartsville.

 

SRR Human Resources Director Machell Mims says the collegiate response has been expectedly impressive from students and career personnel alike.

 

“We figured, going forward, that once implemented, the colleges would immediately recognize that Mr. Olson’s self-initiative is not only special but timely in this economic climate,” she said.

 

"For a manager of his caliber to make himself accessible to college students is, frankly, unheard of,” said Mims. “Especially on a one-on-one basis.”

 

Mims added that Olson’s talks are targeting students with diverse majors, although in past years SRS recruiters have commonly sought out engineering students due to the Site's high-tech environment. 

 

Robert Walker, a freshman marketing major at Paine College, said Olson’s talk was personally relevant. “I’d like to become a CEO someday, but he gave good advice to become fully prepared first.” Walker is from the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia, Ga.

 

Deloris Croom, Paine College's Career Services Director, said Olson’s character and leadership reflects SRR’s commitment to its community. “And obviously, he’s a man of principle,” she said.

 

Gerald DeVaughn, Director of Career Planning at Voorhees College, described Olson’s recent talk as informative and passionate. 

 

“It was obvious the students felt his sincerity,” said DeVaughn.

 

Olson’s primary goal is to help students become better prepared in today’s competitive job market. He provides first-hand, one-on-one feedback on interviewing techniques, resumes, career-planning and other topics pertinent for young graduates prior to their entry into the corporate landscape.

 

Said Olson: “This is my way of helping to prepare the next generation of leaders and in many ways it’s an expanded mentoring opportunity for me. It is rewarding when one of the students sends an e-mail or calls me letting me know they got a job as an intern, co-op or full-time employee aided by our preparation time together. That is what makes it all worthwhile." 

 

Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is the Liquid Waste Contractor at SRS. SRS is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. SAVANNAH RIVER NUCLEAR SOLUTIONS DONATES $150,000 TO PAINE COLLEGE

(Augusta, GA) -- Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS) announces three significant contributions of $50,000 each, over a three-year period, to Paine College, Augusta State Hull College of Business and the CSRA Wounded Warrior Care Project.

The announcement was made at Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver’s office with SRNS officials, North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones and representatives from each of the three recipient organizations.

“As government budgets continue to decline, great communities must form partnerships and relationships with corporate, non-profit, government and quasi-governmental organizations,” said Mayor Copenhaver.  “SRNS’ actions are a tangible example of wise philanthropic leadership that we hope will encourage other corporate citizens to become more involved,” Copenhaver said.

“I am extremely proud of the investments we are making in our local communities,” said Garry Flowers, SRNS President and CEO.  “These leadership gifts are a natural fit with our community giving philosophy, which focuses heavily on education and quality of life,” said Flowers.

As the area’s most successful historically black liberal arts college, Paine College is receiving funding to help generate student interest in careers such as science and mathematics that are critical to the success of the Savannah River Site (SRS) and local industries.

"Access is one of the greatest impediments for students, not just Paine College students, but for students at other institutions," said Dr. George C. Bradley, president of Paine College. "We greatly appreciate the contribution, which will assist us in creating global citizens.  Paine College looks forward to a long and prosperous relationship with with SRNS."

Augusta State University’s Hull College of Business will receive an endowment for the SRNS Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. The funds will be used as a foundation for a first-tier study abroad program to help students expand their global outlook and exposure to other cultures worldwide.

SRNS’ leadership gift will also help fund several combat transition initiatives of the CSRA Wounded Warrior Care Project, including family and marriage retreats, and the expansion of employment and training programs such as the first-in-the-nation Veterans Curation Project for Iraq and Afghanistan returnees.

The SRNS Community Giving Program donated $1 million to non-profit agencies, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, universities and colleges in communities surrounding SRS in 2010. 

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC, is a Fluor-Daniel Partnership comprised of Fluor, Northrop Grumman and Honeywell, responsible for the management and operations of the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, including the Savannah River National Laboratory, located near Aiken, South Carolina.

Three Paine College students to participate in the Lina McCord Summer Internship Program

(Augusta, GA) -- Three Paine College students will participate in the Lina McCord Summer Internship Program. Kiera Cross, Keyla Connie and Alberto Argumedo were three of 12 students chosen from 11 Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs).  They will join nine other interns on January 12-17, 2011 for their official orientation.

The Black College Fund Lina H. McCord Summer Intern Program follows a model of communication and interaction prominent in the Methodist tradition. The itineration enables and enhances understanding between and among groups. Therefore, it is an invaluable means of promoting the Black College Fund and the Black colleges, which the fund supports throughout The United Methodist Church.

The program was conceptualized by Lina H. McCord, Black College Fund executive director from 1979 to 1985, and Paula Watson, United Methodist Communications field representative. In 1981, two student itinerants were sent to the Northeastern Jurisdiction to field test the concept. The project was highly rated by both annual conference participants and students. Between the years 1982 and 1986, five students itinerated, one per jurisdiction, in the Black College Fund Student Itineration Program. The program was renamed the Lina H. McCord Summer Intern Program when Lina McCord retired in 1985.

Shirley A.R. Lewis became executive director in 1986. In January 1992, Lewis was promoted to assistant general secretary and the Black College Fund office was elevated to a section within the Division of Higher Education. Since 1987, successful interns from past years with exceptional communication and promotional skills serve as consultants and ambassadors and help conduct orientation as well as completing short, special assignments.

Students usually cross jurisdictions at least once. Students completing short-term assignments will itinerate for periods ranging in length of time from one to five weeks. The regular schedule of itineration lasts for eight or nine weeks. The itineration is exciting and informative.

The student intern program has continued to grow and to be well received by the church.

Paine College Marketing Club vies for grand prize in national competition

(Augusta, GA)--The Paine College Marketing Club is vying for the "Best Video of the Year Competition" through the Collegiate American Marketing Association (AMA). The campaign is AMASaveLives, which is designed to increase awareness of the need for organ donation through social media campaigns, event sponsorship, personal contacts, and other viral communications. The campaign goal to inspire others to become registered organ donors and organ donor advocates.

Each institution has been asked to submit a video centered around the AMASaveLives campaign to increase organ donations. Each Collegiate AMA chapter can compete in four categories: Registration Competition, Video Competitions, Event Competition, Social Media Competitions and Public Relations Competition.

 All videos were uploaded via the AMA's YouTube site. Each video must receive the largest number of views to win the award revenue from the American Marketing Association for their campus chapter. The Paine AMA was already awarded $350 for "Most Views and Best Video for the month of October". Paine College has entered the "Best Video of the Year Competition", which will be announced at AMA Conference in New Orleans. The Paine College AMA Chapter hopes to win the coveted title and the $3,000 grand prize. The Collegiate AMA will award up to $29,000 in grants to winning chapters in the next few months.  

Paine College is the only Historically Black College and University in the competition. The College is competing against some of our nations largest universities. " The students in the Marketing Club are very excited about this project, " said Torrey Cloud, professor of Marketing at Paine College. " We would really appreciate the support from the faculty/staff and alumni to help promote the campaign."

The Paine AMA chapter has access to the AMASavesLives Dashboard online to view the progress and impact their chapter is making on saving lives.  "Our AMA Chapter can benefit in a number of ways by participating in this community service and social cause marketing project," Cloud said.  The Paine College Marketing Club is also displaying the College core value of service through this initiative. 

" We really just excited to know that we are making a difference for the 108,000+ patients on the transplant waiting list," said Eryka Adams, vice president of Marketing for the Paine AMA. " Our AMA Chapter winning the grand prize of $3,000 would just be the icing on the cake."

"The Divine Nine" Unites to Confront Health Disparities sponsored by New Tools New Visions 2 Augusta

(Augusta, GA)- New Tools New Visions 2 Augusta will sponsor The Divine Nine: Unites to Confront Health Disparities on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 6:00p.m. The event will take place in the Candler Memorial Library Building.

The purpose of the event is to join black Greek organizations and engage in informative and creative community service strategies to address health disparities in the community. Each organization will design exclusive activities and work collaboratively to address the risks, protective factors prevention, and intervention techniques needed to develop and maintain physical and mental health in our communities.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. The nine NPHC organizations are collectively referred to as the "Divine Nine".

Paine College Celebrates Painefest

(Augusta, GA)- Paine College will host its annual Painefest event, October 30, 2010 on the campus of Paine College from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. PaineFest is an annual campus event that occurs during the month of October and is designed to bring people together of all ages and backgrounds to engage in activities that connect the Paine College community with the broader community through its core values of excellence, appreciation of heritage, integrity, fiscal responsibility and service. This year’s theme is “Going from Good to Great in the Community”.

"The institution wants to go from good to great in the community and that’s important. We want to be good neighbors. We want to share with the community the direction of the college,” said Brandon Brown, vice president of Institutional Advancement.

The week will feature several events for Paine College students, alumni and friends. The Paine College Arts Festival, which is FREE and open to the public. The College has teamed up with several churches, schools and community groups to plan events that will be fun and enlightening. The community is invited the to register for the Performing Arts Competitions (Music, Dance, Theatre, Choir competitions).  Local cooks and restaurants can register for The Barbeque Cook-off Competition. Everyone is encouraged to bring their families to enjoy the free festivities.

The College is also partnering with the Wounded Warriors Care Project. Wounded Warriors, active service men and women, and veterans are invited to for a special tribute at 12:00 Noon.  The Paine College Mass Communications Department will videotape of the personal accounts and stories of anyone willing to share. The footage will be edited and archived in the Paine College, Collins-Calloway Library to be shared with other communities throughout the country.  Registration is FREE for Wounded Warriors and Service men and women.

"It’s our way of saying thank you to the Augusta community,” Brown said. “One of the things we’ve done is really look at the dedication and commitment our troops have made — engage and talk with soldiers, interview them, and we really want to show recognition to these soldiers." 

Children can look forward to the Children’s Art Village, which will include face painting, arts and crafts, sing-a-longs and much more. This event is sponsored by New Tools New Vision 2.  Adults can enjoy food court, vendors’ court, art exhibition and book signings by Georgia and South Carolina Authors. ALL EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE PAINE COLLEGE CAMPUS.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond keynote speaker at Paine College's Painefest Assembly Program

(Augusta, GA) - Georgia Labor Commissioner, Michael L. Thurmond, '75 will serve as keynote speaker for Paine College's Painefest celebration on Wednesday, October 27, 2010. The assembly program will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.
 
Painefest is an annual campus event that occurs during the month of October and is designed to bring people together of all ages and backgrounds to engage in activities that connect the Paine College community with the broader community through its core values of excellence, appreciation of heritage, integrity, fiscal responsibility and service. All events will take place October 25-30, 2010.
 
The Paine College Council of Student Organization Presidents sought out a speaker that would uplift and exemplify the spirit of Paine College and the Painefest event. "This year, the event theme is "Going from Good to Great in the Community” collectively the council presidents thought Commissioner Thurmond would be a great choice," said  Natasha Adebiyi, president of Georgia Association of Educators (GAE).  "We look forward to an inspiring message that will resonate with the Paine College and CSRA Community."
 
About Michael L. Thurmond
 
Thurmond has distinguished himself as an attorney, author, lecturer and public servant. Earlier this year, he decided to run for U.S. Senate.
 
In 1986, he answered the call to public service and was elected to the Georgia General Assembly from Clarke County. During his legislative tenure, he was the only African-American legislator elected from a majority white district. While serving in the General Assembly, Thurmond authored major legislation that has provided more than $250 million in tax relief to Georgia’s senior citizens and working families.
 
After serving three terms in the legislature, Governor Zell Miller selected Thurmond to direct Georgia’s historic transition from welfare to work. In 1997, Thurmond became a distinguished lecturer at the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government. The following year, he was elected Georgia Labor Commissioner. Thurmond is currently serving his third term as labor commissioner.
 
Thurmond graduated with honors from Paine College with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion and later earned a juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina’s School of Law.  He also completed the Political Executives program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Thurmond is a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church West, of Athens. He and his wife Zola are the proud parents of a daughter, Mikaya.

Ms. Tomyka Chaney to serve as keynote speaker for Paine College BEEP Week Assembly program

(Augusta, GA)- The Paine College Black Executive Exchange Program (B.E.E.P.) will host assembly on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.  Ms. Tomyka Chaney, Executive Director of Best BOOM! Strategies will serve as the keynote speaker.

Chaney is a motivational speaker and Executive Director of Best BOOM! Strategies, a division of Chaney Consulting and Advisory. She has he has over 12 years experience including being a award winning Business Development Manager and Solutions Sales Consultant with several fortune 500 companies like Xerox, Sprint Global Markets, Delta Air Lines, Manpower, Cox and Gannet Communications.

 As a native of Atlanta, Georgia and a Public Relations graduate of Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia, her professionalism and business acumen has yielded many high revenue contracts and business relationships throughout a cross-section of industries such as Mass Communication, Telecommunications, Finance, Data Solutions, Employment and Education.

Chaney is also an advocate for volunteerism and currently volunteers her training and development skills at the South Dekalb YMCA. She also serves on the Dekalb Juvenile Court Judicial Panel for termination of parental rights where she is instrumental in the quality of life for foster care children in Dekalb County communities. These organizations are very close to her heart and are integral in supporting the family structure for our youth.

In addition, as former Youth President for eight years and currently as Vice President of the Christian Women Auxiliary, she continues to speak and create outreach programs.  She has also held a number of leadership positions on the State level in her Christian organization.

She has spoken and presented to current college students at the Paine College B.E.E.P. Program, Paine College Rotary Club and several speaker series events is the Atlanta metro area. In fact, she has helped motivate prospective college students at several local colleges and universities, where she was instrumental in inspiring students through Best BOOM! Strategies workshops and seminars that helped change their lives and begin a career path for themselves. She has worked with 900 students and alumni in motivating them to weather the current economy by creating a job club that was hugely successful. Through this series of workshops and seminars Best Boom! Strategies, a consulting firm located in Midtown was born.

Paine College to crown new queen and king

(AUGUSTA, GA) - The coronation of Miss and Mr. Paine College 2010-2011 will be held on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in Gilbert- Lambuth Memorial Chapel. Miss Ciara Harris and Mr. Zachary Lynn Williams will take their places as student ambassadors for the academic school year.

Harris is a junior, Early Childhood Education major. Upon graduation, she plans to attend graduate school to obtain a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She would like to become a teacher and principal of an elementary school located in a low income or rural area.

Harris is currently a member of the Student Government Association, Georgia Association of Educators, Lions Activity Board and currently serves as a tutor with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Augusta. She has served as a member of the Paine College Cheerleading Team, Track and Field Team, New Student Orientation team, Art Club and Spanish Club. She has also immersed herself in several philanthropic efforts including volunteerism at the Soup Kitchen, Metro Adult Literacy Center and Sheppard Blood Bank Center.

Harris recently represented Paine College in the Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Pageant where she was placed in the top 20. “I am elated to take my place as a student ambassador and do all in my power to represent Paine College locally, regionally and nationally,” Harris said.

Williams is a junior, Biology major. Upon graduation, he plans to study to become and Chiropractor and eventually own a practice. He is currently a member of the Student Government Association, Pre-Professional Science Alliance, president for Brother 2 Brother and actively involved in Paine College's Go-Green Initiatives.

As an ambassador for Paine College, Williams hopes to reach out to every male student by implementing his platform program  "Intellectual Men Promoting Academic Character and Truth" (I.M.P.A.C.T.). The program was developed to highlight performing strong academically and the need to build and develop solid character traits.

Williams will also continue to develop Brother 2 Brother a mentoring organization developed by Mr. Paine College 2009-2010. The organization has been recognized nationally by the Michael Baisden One Million Mentors Program and was developed to will allow Paine College male students to serve as positive male role models and mentors for young males in the CSRA Community.

" I will represent this institution and serve as a liaison between the administration and the student body because I personally care about everyone of my fellow Paineites," Williams said.

Institutional Advancement welcomes Tiffany Brooks as Manager of Annual Fund & Corporate Relations

Dr. George C. Bradley, president of Paine College announced today the appointment of Ms. Tiffany Brooks as Manager of the Annual Fund & Corporate Relations. The hiring of Ms. Brooks was a step toward expanding the Office of Alumni Relations and its capacity building initiatives.

Brooks, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Paine College in 2009.   Prior to joining the Paine College staff as Admissions Counselor and Recruiter for the Office of Admissions, Brooks served as News Director of WAAW Rejoice 94.7 FM in Aiken, South Carolina.

Brooks is a member of the National Association of Directors, Registrars and Admissions Officers (NACDRAO), Paine College Staff Association, and Paine College Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Team. She serves as the advisor for the Paine College Pre-Alumni Council and Crème de la Crème Modeling Club. 

As Manager of the Annual Fund and Corporate Relations, Brooks will assist the Director of Alumni Relations with administering, planning and supervising the College’s overall Alumni Relations program.  She will assist with planning alumni events and activities while working to expand the College’s annual alumni giving and annual fund campaigns.  She will oversee the management of the Alumni Database and develop fundraising strategies to increase the College’s endowment and endowed scholarship program.   Also, she will cultivate relationships with corporations, foundations and organizations to build support for the College.

Brooks believes as an alumna of Paine College she can actively engage alumni of all ages to support the College’s fundraising initiatives.  “I am dedicated to advancing the College’s alumni giving program,” she said.  “Working with the Alumni Relations and Institutional Advancement staff to develop strategies to cultivate alumni to support my alma mater will be rewarding.  I look forward to meeting alumni throughout the state, the country and abroad.”
