Dear Paine College Alumni and Friends,

Many students who are brilliant and want to have higher education have to depend on scholarships to make their dreams of higher education come true. In this letter, I appeal to you on behalf of many students who need scholarships in order to acquire a higher education.
It is a great honor to be a part of this wonderful cause for Paine College National Alumni Association. I have long believed that all students should have the opportunity to attend college. Having supported my nephews in their journeys through college, I know that it was an unspeakable rewarding experience to see them reach their goals during and after college. However, this is not the case for all students. There are many young adults with bright futures who are unable to attend college simply because they cannot afford the tuition.
That is why I am making a personal effort to support the Paine College National Alumni Association in raising money for the Paine College Scholarship Fund, by being a part of this spectacular event that will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2013, 7:00 p.m., at the Saint Phillips AME Church in Decatur, Georgia.
Please join me in my efforts to support higher education through your participation and sponsorship of this event. Presiding Bishop of Christian Methodist Episcopal Church to Serve as Keynote Speaker at 131st Baccalaureate Convocation

(Augusta, GA) – Paine College is elated to announce presiding Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Teresa E. Snorton as the keynote speaker at the 131st Baccalaureate Convocation.  The service will take place in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 3 p.m.   Bishop Snorton is the first female bishop elected to serve in the history of the CME Church.

Bishop Snorton became the 59th bishop elected in the CME Church on June 30, 2010 in Mobile, Alabama.  She was assigned as the presiding bishop of the new Eleventh Episcopal District, which includes eleven countries in Central, Southern and East Africa.  On March 15, 2011 (after the passing of Bishop W.E. Lockett), Bishop Snorton was assigned to the Fifth Episcopal District, which includes the states of Alabama and Florida.


Bishop Snorton served as the Executive Director of the national Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. for twelve years prior to her election as bishop. Bishop Snorton is a certified ACPE Supervisor and a board certified chaplain. She is a former Executive Director of the Emory Center for Pastoral Services in Atlanta, Georgia.   She has taught at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, the Virginia Commonwealth University and the School of Theology at Virginia Union University.

Bishop Snorton is a fourth generation, life-long CME. Her great-grandfather, father and uncle were all CME pastors and her grandmother was an active missionary. Her two sisters are also CME ministers. As an ordained minister in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, she was a former pastor in Kentucky, and an associate minister in CME churches in Virginia and Georgia.
 

Bishop Snorton has a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University, a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Patient Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
 

Bishop Snorton is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Miles College and Chair of the CME Department of Lay Ministries.  She is a member of the Society for Pastoral Theology, the CME Chaplains Commission, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and the Pan-Methodist Commission.  She is chair of the Family Life Committee of the World Methodist Council. Prior to her election as Bishop, she was a member of the CME Commission on the Concerns of Women in Ministry for eight years.

 
She is the author of several articles, chapters and books reviews on topics related to pastoral care and ministry.  Recent works include a co-edited work with Dr. Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner, Women Out of Order: Risking Change and Creating Care in a Multi-Cultural World (Fortress Press, 2009) and a chapter in Courageous Conversations: The Teaching and Learning of Pastoral Supervision (University Press of America, 2010).

 
Bishop Snorton has two adult sons and two grandchildren.

Paine College Presidential Scholar Elected to National Board of Directors

(Augusta, GA) -The Paine College Honors Program is pleased to announce that Fatima Ojeda Rojas has been elected to the Board of Directors for the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC).  NCHC is the professional association for undergraduate collegiate honors programs.  It is a tremendous honor to have a member of the Paine College Honors Program serving in a leadership role for NCHC.

 
A native of Puebla, Mexico, Rojas calls Atlanta, Georgia her home. She is a sophomore Business Management Information Systems major who upon completion of her studies at Paine College plans to continue her studies in computer science at the University of California Berkley. She is interested in providing assistance to communities with little technological accessibility and knowledge in developing countries.

 
“As a Student Board Member, I will not only be able to add diversity and personality to this year’s committee, but also new ideas to persuade students to want to take part in these conferences,” stated Rojas, “Thank you for this great opportunity.”

 
During her tenure at Paine College, Rojas has shown outstanding leadership skills by serving as the vice president of Paine College’s Business Club, president of the French Club, as well as president of the International Student Association (ISA). She is a varsity member of the Paine College Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team, Wesley Fellowship, and serves on the institution’s Disciplinary Committee. Rojas ultimately plans to start her own software company.

Dean secures Paine College as a Flagship Institution in “A Network for Understanding the New Europe”

(Augusta, GA) – Under the leadership of Dr. Emily Allen-Williams, Paine College Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, the College has been awarded funding as one of 20 Flagship Campuses in a new project entitled "A Network for Understanding the New Europe" (hereafter the New Europe project) as a part of the Getting to Know Europe funding initiative.

This project began in January 2013 with a competitive process to select institutions from Faculty Resource Network membership that were committed to becoming Flagship Campuses in the project.

These 20 Flagship Campuses have agreed to send faculty members as Institutional Ambassadors to the three faculty development seminars based on the faculty member’s area of expertise. These institutions also will provide faculty members with the infrastructure and support for organizing public events on their own campuses.
Williams, the Institutional Liaison Officer for Paine College, has selected the following faculty for participation in this project, which involves three seminars and public forums:

• Dr. Jeffrey R. Thomas (Assistant Professor of Religion) – “Understanding the New Europe:  Immigration” (June 10-14, 2013)
• Dr. Andre Key (Assistant Professor of History) – “Understanding the New Europe:  Politics” (January 13-17, 2014)
• Mr. Robert Jones (Assistant Professor of History/Political Economics) – “Understanding the New Europe:  Economics” (June 9-13, 2014)

At the culmination of the faculty involvement in the seminars, Williams will lead the faculty in working with the Paine College Community and the Greater Augusta/CSRA Region in a series of public forums. A series of six forums will be planned:  three in the Fall Semester 2014 and three in the Spring Semester 2015. Each of the forums will focus on the topics of the three seminars:  Understanding the New Europe:  Immigration, Politics, and Economics.

Paine College Professor Awarded UNCF/Mellon Teaching and Learning Institute Grant

(Augusta, GA) – Paine College recently received a UNCF/Mellon Teaching and Learning Institute grant sponsored by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the Mellon Foundation. Dr. Belinda Wheeler, assistant professor of English in the Department of Humanities, serves as the facilitator and coordinator of the project, titled “Expanding the Harlem Renaissance’s Relevance across the Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) Curriculum.” Other Paine College professors who will serve as co-facilitators for the upcoming interdisciplinary institute are Dr. Gary Flanigan (Media Studies), Dr. Emily Prince (Science, Technology, and Mathematics), and Dr. Tatiana Rivadeneyra (Education).

The amount of the award is $30,000 and the funds will be used to hold a three-day institute on the Paine College campus. The institute, which will take place fall 2013, will involve an interdisciplinary group of scholars from other UNCF institutions around the country in order to shape and expand students’ understanding of the Harlem Renaissance as a significant period in America’s cultural and intellectual history. At the completion of the three-day institute Dr. Wheeler and her team will be responsible for compiling a comprehensive report that provides details of the institute, including evaluation results. This report will then be distributed to all UNCF institutions across the nation to help them with their curriculum goals.


In her letter to Dr. Wheeler, Dr. Cynthia Neal Spence, Director of the UNCF/Mellon programs, wrote, “The proposed institute will strengthen teaching and learning activities for Paine College and other participating UNCF institutions.  The opportunity to share your institutional legacy and commitment to the writers, thinkers and creators associated with the Harlem Renaissance will be valuable to all who participate.” 
 

Wheeler’s work with the Harlem Renaissance expands well beyond this upcoming institute. She has two forthcoming articles on African American poet, artist, editor, columnist, and educator, Gwendolyn Bennett, one in PMLA and another in Wiley-Blackwell’s Companion to the Harlem Renaissance. Wheeler is currently writing a book on Bennett titled, Gwendolyn Bennett: The Harlem Renaissance's Quintessential Poet, Artist, Editor, and Columnist (under contract with University Press of Mississippi).  Recently, Wheeler uncovered the only known painting by Bennett.
 

About Dr. Wheeler:
Originally from Queensland, Australia, Belinda Wheeler earned her B.A. in English from Purdue University in 2005, her M.A. in English from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 2008, and her Ph.D. in English from Southern Illinois University in 2011. Wheeler's research interests include American literature (particularly modernism), multicultural literature (including Australian Aboriginal literature, African American literature, and Native American literature), and print culture and book history. Wheeler teaches a range of classes at Paine including Literary Theory, African American Literature, American Literature, Shakespeare, Introduction to Literature, and freshman Composition. Wheeler’s first book, A Companion to Australian Aboriginal Literature (editor and contributor, Camden House/ Boydell & Brewer) will be released August 2013.

Governor Nathan Deal to Give Address during the Paine College 131st Commencement Convocation

(Augusta, GA) – Dr. George C. Bradley announced today that Paine College had reached another milestone in its 131st year of existence.  “For the first time in history a sitting governor will give the address to the graduating class,” said Bradley.  “Governor John Nathan Deal will bring the keynote address to the Class of 2013 on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.”   The Commencement Convocation will also return to the campus and will take place inside the new Health Education Activities Learning (HEAL) Complex located at 1255 Druid Park Avenue, Augusta, Georgia.

Dr. Bradley commented that Governor Deal’s commitment to supporting higher education and his example as a leader will motivate the graduating seniors and inspire the faculty, staff, undergraduates and the public.
 
Governor Deal took the oath of office as Georgia’s 82nd governor on Jan. 10, 2011.   The governor’s top goal is making Georgia the No. 1 place in the nation to do business, a goal he’s strived toward by creating the Competitiveness Initiative, reforming our tax code and recruiting businesses to relocate here.

In his first term, he has cut state taxes, eliminated state agencies, reduced the state government workforce, saved HOPE from the brink of bankruptcy, championed education innovations, cracked down on illegal immigration and implemented significant cost-saving reforms in our criminal justice system. This past session, he fought to increase public safety on our waterways, worked to save lives and taxpayer dollars through juvenile justice reform, improved our workforce by aiding veterans and technical college students, and called for stricter rules on lobbying to boost public trust.

Gov. Deal’s public service to his state spans four decades. The Sandersville native served in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon in Augusta after graduating with a law degree from Mercer University, and then began a private law practice in Gainesville, the hometown of his wife, Sandra Dunagan Deal. While his wife taught in Hall County public schools, the governor began a long span of service to his community as prosecutor, judge, state senator and U.S. congressman.

During his 17 years in Congress, Deal rose to chair the Health Subcommittee of Energy and Commerce, where he became a noted expert on entitlement reform and health care policy.

Deal ended his congressional career to campaign for governor, becoming the Republican nominee in August 2010 and then winning the governorship in November of that year.

The governor and first lady have four adult children and six grandchildren.

Paine College and Georgia Regents University Partner to Celebrate Earth Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Paine College and Georgia Regents University have partnered to celebrate Earth Day Friday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the courtyard beside the GRU Wellness Center on the university’s Health Sciences Campus.

A “Bike to GRU/Paine College Day” will also take place on April 19. Everyone is encouraged to ride with others along one of three routes: the North Augusta Greeneway, the Augusta Canal and down the “Hill area.” Riders will leave from Savannah Rapids Pavilion at 6:45 a.m., North Augusta at 7 a.m. and Daniel Village at 7:30 a.m.; or cyclers can join the routes at other points. When bikers arrive on campus, they will receive juice, pastries and raffle tickets for gift certificates from local bike shops and Earth Day goodies.

 
This year’s theme is “Think Green, Live Green, Work Green.” The event is designed to inspire the GRU, Paine College and Augusta community to help the planet by “going green” every day, not just on Earth Day. 

Tree seedlings and other small indoor and outdoor plants will be given away, while supplies last, as well as recycled items and recycled Styrofoam coolers. Attendees are also encouraged to drop off items to recycle at college.
 

“We want people to bring items to recycle, including used eyeglasses, cell phones, writing instruments, such as pens, pencils and highlighters, and printer cartridges,” said Linda Saunders, event organizer.

Vendors, who will demonstrate how they are helping to go green, will open booths at 10 a.m. Food vendors, including Crums and Brown Bag Augusta, will also be on-site during lunch. Tables will be available, in addition to Student Center dining. Southern Swiss Dairy will have ice cream for sale.

In case of rain, the event will move to the Wellness Center. Parking is available at Kroger on 15th Street and the Laney High School Stadium. Shuttles between the Summerville campus and Laney-Walker Boulevard will be available.

Paine Students Return from Presenting Research at Howard University

(Augusta, GA) –Four Paine College English majors, within the School of Arts and Sciences, recently presented parts of their major field papers at the 30th Annual Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC) Conference held in March at Howard University in Washington D.C. The group of students included Artis Collins, Jameelah T. Jones, Michael A. Jones, and Jasmine Proctor.  Dr. Catherine Adams, who teaches the English research project course this semester, served as the moderator for the Paine student panel.
 

Artis Collins discussed the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass as an "ancestral" text to the Autobiography of Malcolm X. His presentation paid special attention to themes such as access to literacy, the absence of fathers, and the definitions of freedom within the two texts.
 

Jameelah T. Jones examined Georgia as a literary landscape in selected works by Frank Yerby. Her excavation of Yerby's protest stories and her re-examination of latent protest themes in two Yerby novels convinced conference attendees that Yerby is worthy of new consideration.
 

Michael A. Jones discussed his expansion of the critical work of Toni Morrison in terms of examining the fate of protagonists in Africana literature by understanding the presence and usefulness of the elders/ancestor figure. His research will include several novels – one of which is Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man upon which he focused at the conference.
 

Jasmine Proctor re-examined autobiographical works by Pauli Murray looking for references and resonances of elder and ancestral wisdom that arguably shaped her activism in legal and religious studies. Proctor's research is looking closely at Murray's grandfather as a pivotal figure who was well acquainted with Jim Crow and who passed on to his granddaughter a lens for her understanding of "Jane Crow"--a phrase coined by Murray.


"This experience has been so rich,” said Michael Jones, “To sit at the feet of the scholars and exemplars of the day was such a humbling experience for me. For them to count my work worthy of review helped me further realize that as a young, emerging scholar I have a greater responsibility."


During their stay in Washington DC, students were able to visit historical sites such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument and the Frederick Douglass House.

Paine College Dean Elected to Serve As Council of Undergraduate Research Councilor

(Augusta, GA) – Paine College Dean of the School of Art and Sciences, Dr. Emily Williams has been selected to serve a 3 year term as a Council of Undergraduate Research Councilor for the At-Large Division. 


 The Council on Undergraduate Research, founded in 1978, is a national organization of individual and institutional members representing over 900 colleges and universities.  CUR is governed by a Council, which is elected by the members of each of its seven disciplinary divisions, one at-large, and one division for undergraduate research program directors. Its divisional structure includes arts and humanities, biology, chemistry, geosciences, health sciences and a host of other disciplines.

Williams’ was selected for her “work in supporting and promoting high quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship,” stated Mary Crowe, President of the Council on Undergraduate Research. As a councilor for the CUR, Williams will assist in leading the organizations programs, meetings and benefits offerings.


"I am so pleased to accept my appointment as a Councilor-at-Large with CUR.  It is an opportunity for me to serve but moreover to lift up the research and scholarship of Paine College students in providing them with the resources and venues to engage fully in the research and presentation opportunities that will be a central part of their professional lives," stated Williams. The Dean’s term will begin at the 34th Annual Business Meeting, scheduled for June 20, 2013, at Chapman University in Orange, California.  Williams’ term as CUR Councilor will end at the conclusion of the business meeting in 2016.
