Former Lady Lions Volleyball Player Gives Her Time and Talents

Posted by kmay | 09/28/2010 01:30 AM

Augusta, GA- “When you are in college, you have no clue! You just go with the flow.  But as you mature, you understand the value of serving God, loving one another, and doing things for people to touch their lives.”  “If something should happen to me, I want to be remembered for doing something nice for others, so that they may be Blessed in some way, shape, or form, so I am extremely happy to return to Paine to offer my services” is what Joey Hayes Cummings Paine College Alumna Class of ’96 had to say when asked how she felt about returning to Paine College.

The Paine College Lady Lions Volleyball team hosted a Zumba® party as part of their community service events for the year, Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in Carter Gymnasium. The Zumba® party, which was taught by Mrs. Cummings, was incorporated into collecting can goods and non-perishable items to be donated locally to the Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Zumba® is a fusion of Latin and international music that creates a dynamic aura that combines salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, and samba.

“A successful event", says Head Coach for the Lady Lions, Selina B. Kohn and Assistant Coach Zack Howard. " We had 75-85 participants and we were able to do what we set out to do; lend a hand in making a difference in the community.”

Not only did the Zumba® party allow for Paine College students to show their compassion for the unfortunate, but it gave the students an opportunity to exercise, and recognize the importance of health.

With Paine being a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), the cohort of students is predominately African American.   “We are already at risk for comorbidities, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other cardiovascular diseases, so it is very important to me to encourage others to become physically fit. Walking, running, Zumba®, anything that will get you moving is what is important to take care of yourself, and improve the quality of life” says Cummings.  “The lesson I hope that I have left with my future alumnus, is love one another, obey your parents, and I want them to remember that the choices you make affect your future, so strive to have a happy and successful one!”

The Paine College Lady Lions Volleyball team, along with other athletic teams at Paine College participate in community services activities throughout the year, in addition to being student athletes.
