Augusta, GA- Athletic Director, Coach Ronnie Spry, announced today that Coach Willie Adams will lead the Lady Lions Basketball team. Coach Adams brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in his 14th year at Paine College where he previously served as the assistant basketball coach for the Lions and steered the women’s cross country and track team for over 12 years.
Coach Spry commented, “Adams was an outstanding basketball player and all-around athlete while a student at Paine College. A natural leader, he served as Team Captain and was a member of the Lions Championship team and later garnered the Most Improved Player Award. His expertise, experience and being familiar with our athletic program will help him to do an outstanding job.”
“I am truly excited to be a part of the Paine College legacy where there is an exceptional basketball history,” said Adams. “It is my desire to continue to build winning teams on and off the court that will compete successfully in the athletic and academic arenas.”
During his tenure, Adams guided the women’s cross country program from 3rd place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) to 2nd place in 2004. He coached several players to the All-Conference Team in Cross Country and track & field for several consecutive years. In 1998, Adams coached freshman Samantha Daniels to the All-Conference team in cross country, and in 1999, Melissa Calhoun to the All-Conference Awards; and Casheba Ellis All-Conference in 2009.
In 2000 through 2002, Adams coached Clensy Warren (Javelin); LaTasha Russell (Discus); and the 4 X 100 Relay and 4 X 400 Relay teams to All-Conference awards in track and field. He also coached Savoyia Baerrett to a Conference Championship in the Javelin (2005-2006) and Lakeisha Bell four straight years to the High Jump Championship (2006-2009). In 1999 and 2002, Adams played an integral role in assisting the Men’s Basketball Championship teams.
A native of Brunswick, Georgia, Adams was an outstanding athlete at Brunswick High School where he lettered four years in basketball and football. While at Brunswick High School, he also played baseball. After graduating from high school, Adams attended Lake City Community College, Lake City, Florida; and later transferred to Paine College where he played basketball from 1992-1994.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an Emphasis in Criminology from Paine College in 1996 and a Masters of Education Degree from Troy University in 2005. Adams is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Black Coaches and Administrators Association. He is married to CeKisha Adams.
