Paine College Dean Elected to Serve As Council of Undergraduate Research Councilor

(Augusta, GA) – Paine College Dean of the School of Art and Sciences, Dr. Emily Williams has been selected to serve a 3 year term as a Council of Undergraduate Research Councilor for the At-Large Division. 


 The Council on Undergraduate Research, founded in 1978, is a national organization of individual and institutional members representing over 900 colleges and universities.  CUR is governed by a Council, which is elected by the members of each of its seven disciplinary divisions, one at-large, and one division for undergraduate research program directors. Its divisional structure includes arts and humanities, biology, chemistry, geosciences, health sciences and a host of other disciplines.

Williams’ was selected for her “work in supporting and promoting high quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship,” stated Mary Crowe, President of the Council on Undergraduate Research. As a councilor for the CUR, Williams will assist in leading the organizations programs, meetings and benefits offerings.


"I am so pleased to accept my appointment as a Councilor-at-Large with CUR.  It is an opportunity for me to serve but moreover to lift up the research and scholarship of Paine College students in providing them with the resources and venues to engage fully in the research and presentation opportunities that will be a central part of their professional lives," stated Williams. The Dean’s term will begin at the 34th Annual Business Meeting, scheduled for June 20, 2013, at Chapman University in Orange, California.  Williams’ term as CUR Councilor will end at the conclusion of the business meeting in 2016.

Renaming and Dedication of Ruth B. Crawford Highway

(Augusta, GA)—In honor of Paine College alumna Dr. Ruth B. Crawford ’39, and by the Authority of the General Assembly of Georgia House Resolution 1643, the College is pleased to announce the renaming and dedication of Georgia State Route 4. On Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. the route will become officially known as the Ruth B. Crawford Highway.  The Resolution was spearheaded by Representative Wayne Howard.

This momentous occasion will take place on the campus of Paine College, in the Gandy Richardson Lecture Hall, located on the second floor of Haygood Holsey Hall. The community is strongly encouraged to attend this free and open to the public event.

About Dr. Ruth B. Crawford:

She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Paine College, Master of Science degree in Education from Indiana University and an Honorary Doctorate of Human Letter from Paine College.

Crawford was employed as a teacher with the Richmond County Board of Education soon after her matriculation at Paine College. During her 38-year tenure, she provided opportunities for thousands of students to achieve academic excellence in a variety of academic areas.

In 1977, Crawford retired from the Richmond County School System and founded Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center where she served 30 years as its Founding Executive Administrator on a volunteer basis. During this time, she devoted her life community service, assisting the elderly, helping to provide food, clothing and shelter for the needy.  She also worked hard to continue educating youth and worked with the court system to rehabilitate first time criminal offenders.

Many have recognized Crawford for her outstanding achievements and generous contributions. She has been a lifetime supporter of Paine College, where she is a charter member of the President’s Club and has been selected as one of Paine College's Distinguished Alumni.  She also was commissioned to design the Paine College Flag.  Continuing her pursuit to provide education and access to students, The Ruth B. Crawford Endowed Chair in Education was established in her honor.

She has received honors and awards including the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Service from WJBF-TV, the Humanitarian of the Year Award from University Hospital, The Governor's Award from two different Georgia Governors, The Good Samaritan Award presented by the St. Joseph Foundation, the Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the J.C. Penny Gold Rule Award, and many more.

Today, Crawford continues to serve her community. She is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Paine College National Alumni Association, and Georgia Retired Teachers.  She is a member of the National Association of University Women; a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and a member and Trustee Emerita of William Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.  She has written and published three books, Woods Afire, The Greatest Story Never Told and Peace, Power and Purpose of Volunteering.

Ms. Crawford resides in Augusta, Georgia.  Her family includes children: Dr. George I. (Dee) Crawford, and grandchildren Dr. Christine Ruth Crawford, Drs. George I. (Monica) Crawford, Jr. and Drs. Marcus H. (Kristina) Crawford.

Williams Memorial CME Church to Host Paine College Day

 (Augusta, GA) – Williams Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of Augusta will host its annual Paine College Day on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The keynote speaker for this event is Brandon P. Brown, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at the College.

“Williams Memorial will observe Paine College Day, as we celebrate our rich heritage and the gateway to the world”, stated Reverend Dr. Paul W. Gardner, Senior Pastor of Williams Memorial CME Church.

With a rich heritage indeed, the history of Williams Memorial spans nearly 140 years in the city of Augusta.  In 1873, a few devoted Christians worshiping together organized a church in the West-End Cemetery Hicks Street, in the Rollinville section of Augusta, Georgia.  The few convened on the site until 1878.  When they acquired sufficient funds, they purchased a lot on Telfair Street in the Old Harrisburg section.  At this time, the first edifice on this spot was erected, and they named it Holsey Chapel in honor of Bishop Lucius Holsey who was the Presiding Bishop at that time. He was the prime factor in the founding and establishing of Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.  Bishop Holsey served as Senior Bishop for eighteen years and died in August 1920.

It was not until 1935, when the church changed its name to Williams Memorial in honor of the late Bishop R.S. Williams, who was the sixth bishop of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church.

About Brandon Brown

Brandon Pendarvis Brown, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Paine College, graduated in 2000 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in History from Paine. Brown earned the Masters of Human Resource Development from Webster University in 2010.  A native of Greenville, South Carolina, he founded the Historical Black College and University Sports Classic which has contributed more than $200,000 to institutions across the Southeast.  The Sports Classic was designed to empower Upstate South Carolina students to realize educational opportunities at post-secondary institutions.   

Committed to higher education, he joined the staff of Paine College in 2008 to lead his Alma Mater’s fundraising and development unit.  Under his leadership in 2009, the College increased its annual contributions and his fundraising unit raised over $5 million.

Upon his arrival at Paine, he was charged with raising the funds to build the new Health Education Activities Learning Complex that opened to the public in January 2013.  The new sprawling facility has transformed the College’s physical plant and landscape.  The 43,000 sq. ft. facility houses classrooms, research labs, meeting and conference rooms, and serves as the new home for the Paine College Department of Athletics.

Brown carved a notch in the political arena when in 2006, he served as State Deputy Political Director for then Senator Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.  In 2004, Brown became the first African American to run for a seat in the United States Congress from South Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District.

He also served as Executive Director of the Allen Temple Community Development Center and he co-founded the Upstate Black Family Reunion, which promotes community unity. Brown is active in a variety of civic and social organizations in both Georgia and South Carolina. As an organizing member of the Greenville Tech Multi-cultural Advisory Board, he was instrumental in helping to heal the Greenville community during racial unrest after one of the officials of Greenville Technical College referred to the Katrina evacuees as yard apes.

Brown currently serves on several boards and he is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.  He is a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Greenville but actively works with CME, AME and UMC Churches throughout the country to secure resources for church and education development.

He’s received many honors and awards and was honored by The South Carolina State Senate on the Motion of Senator Ralph Anderson for his service to the community. Brown was also recognized by the South Carolina General Assembly (State House and State Senate) with a Concurrent Resolution for his achievements. This is one of the highest honors a person can receive in the State of South Carolina and is written into the State’s Journal and General Assembly’s history.   Brown still works and keeps in touch with The Vice President of the United States and his team.

 

He is married to TV News Anchor Kimberely Scott Brown.

Paine College Hires Dr. Samuel Sullivan as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

(Augusta, Ga) -- Paine College has hired Dr. Samuel Sullivan as its new Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Sullivan comes out of retirement after having retired as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Augusta State University in August 2011 where he also served as a member of the 2011 Executive Vice President/Provost Search Committee for Georgia Health Sciences University. A 40-year veteran of higher education, he demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, effective planning and assessment, and student success.

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to join Dr. Bradley’s team as we strive to continue the excellence that Paine College brings to the Augusta community, the state, and the nation", said Dr. Sullivan.

A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Sullivan earned the B. S. degree in physics and mathematics from North Carolina Central University, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics, from Howard University.

After finishing graduate school, Dr. Sullivan began his career as a member of the physics faculty at Federal City College in Washington, D.C. In later years as a college administrator, Dr. Sullivan participated in the merger of Federal City College, Washington Technical Institute, and the District of Columbia Teachers College into the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

At UDC, he held several senior administrative positions. Among them were: Associate President for Academic Personnel Management, Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and University Ombudsman. In addition a record of outstanding teaching and service, his accomplishments included the establishment of a Division of Research, Training, and International Programs. Dr. Sullivan also led university efforts to develop academic programs with agencies and institutions in other nations, including: Egypt, the Dominican Republic, South Africa, and Russia.

Upon joining Augusta State University, Dr. Sullivan served on numerous university committees including: the President’s Cabinet, the Academic Vice President’s Council, University Council, the Affirmative Action Committee, the Program Advisory Committee, the Retention Committee, and an Ex-Officio Trustee of the Augusta State University Foundation. As Vice President of Academic Affairs, he also led implementation of the university’s strategic planning initiatives.

Dr. Sullivan provided invaluable service to the university, the community and the CSRA. His service on boards of directors included: the Rachel Longstreet Foundation, Inc., the United Way of the CSRA, the Augusta Museum of History, the Augusta State University Foundation, Inc., the Augusta Biomedical Research Corporation, the Georgia Health Sciences University Research Institute, and the Ike and Justine Washington Foundation, Inc.

Dr. Sullivan is Augusta State University’s recipient of the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award for 2011. This award bears the name of a former ASU president, and it recognizes outstanding service to the university, students and the community.

Dr. Sullivan is a member of Alpha Mu Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and Psi Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. In addition, Dr. Sullivan volunteers as executive director of the Ike and Justine Washington Foundation.

Dr. Sullivan is married to Dr. Lucinda Ross Sullivan and they have one son.

Paine College Hires New Chief of Campus Safety

(Augusta, GA)—Today, Paine College officials introduced the College’s new Chief of Campus Safety, Joseph D. Nelson to Paine College faculty, staff, and students who gathered to discuss the College’s campus safety measures.

Nelson comes to Paine College with more than 22 years of law enforcement experience.  Nelson’s work career began in 1988 where he joined the U.S. Army delayed entry program in Augusta, Georgia.  Upon graduating from Wren’s High School in 1990, he entered into Military Police School at Fort McClellan in Alabama where he was trained to enforce federal and military law.  He performed a variety of patrol duties and possessed a top secret security clearance during his active duty status for the U.S. Army.

In 1991, Nelson was sent to White Sands missile range where he performed law enforcement duties, served as personal security for the post commander and foreign dignitaries.  During that time, he earned a top secret security clearance.

In 1992, he transferred to Fort Bliss, Texas where he continued to perform patrol and law enforcement duties. 

He separated from the U.S. Army and embarked upon civilian life as a police officer for the Washington Police Department in 1993.  He was promoted to sergeant and became a patrol supervisor for the department.  Later in 1997, he became attached to the Drug Task Force and arrested and convicted street level drug dealers.

In 2000, he was promoted to Lieutenant and oversaw investigations for the Washington County Police Department where he managed all investigations in the city limits of Washington, Georgia and succeeded in reducing the drug activity.  During his tenure at the Washington County Police Department, he was responsible for over 1,000 drug arrests and drug convictions.  During that time, he received numerous accolades which include awards from the Governor’s Office, the State Senate and organizations such as M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) for outstanding Police work.  He was selected Police Officer of the Year by his co-workers twice. 

Nelson stated that he was always eager to perform his duties.  “I reported to work early and left late and always made sure that the jobs and tasks were completed and done correctly.”

Nelson returned to school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Law with a Minor in Psychology.  He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Troy University. In 2007, Nelson earned his Master's degree in Criminal Justice.

In March 2010, Nelson served as Chief of Police in the City of Thompson, Georgia and was employed with the Waynesboro Police Department as Lieutenant over the Criminal Investigation and Crime Suppression Division. 

Nelson was active in numerous cases within the City of Waynesboro and was instrumental in reducing and suppressing drug activity with the city limits.  He arrested 23 drug dealers during the notable Operation Clean Sweep in Waynesboro.

Nelson’s plan is to grow the presence of campus safety at Paine College.  “The students’ safety is a priority,” said Nelson.

He is married to Kimberly Lavon Nelson and is the proud father of three children.

Media Studies Department to Host HIV/AIDS Awareness Forum

(Augusta, Ga) – The Paine College Media Studies Department will host an event to commemorate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  The awareness program will take place March 8, 2013, 10:30 am in the Candler Memorial Library Ballroom on the Paine College campus.

The ambassador for the Georgia Red Pump Project, Ms. Skyy Banks, will speak about HIV and AIDS awareness.  After the lecture, women and girls will be invited to be photographed on the red carpet.  The image will become a part of the national support day of activities. 

The nationwide observance, held annually on March 10th, will shed light on the disease and will encourage the public to take action and share knowledge in a variety of ways.  Also, focus will be placed on urging all social media platforms to share the facts about HIV/AIDS and how it impacts women and girls.  

HIV/AIDS is a serious public health issue for women and girls. In 2010, they made up two-thirds of people who got the disease by having heterosexual sex. African-American women and girls continue to be disproportionately affected. Their rate of becoming infected with HIV in 2010 was 20 times that of white women and girls.

History Club Hosts 4th Annual Cedar Grove Historical Re-enactments

(Augusta, Ga) – The Paine College History Club will host its 4th Annual Cedar Grove Historical Re-enactments on Saturday March 9, 2013.  The tours are scheduled for 11:00am, 12:00 noon, and 1:00pm. The tours will take place at the historic African American cemetery located at Cedar Grove in Augusta, Georgia.

“The tours are free and are priceless!  So much about African American history is demonstrated through the tour guides and the re-enactors”, stated Author Holmes, Professor of History and History Club advisor.

In 1820, Augusta allotted 40 acres of land where slaves were laid to rest in wooden boxes or were simply wrapped in cloth and buried in unmarked, shallow graves. The first records of burials at Cedar Grove Cemetery are found on page 100 of Book A, July 1840. It reads, "6 blacks, 2 of whom children". At this time in history, names of the deceased or their masters were not listed.

It was not until June of 1862 that the records began to show the colored report, giving date died, sometimes names, disease, age, sex, wards in which they lived, and the names of their owners.  In June of 1865, the report started listing the deceased of freedman instead of property. In April of 1880, separate books from Magnolia Cemetery burials were started. The record books can be found in a safe at Magnolia Cemetery, containing records of the past up till present day, but no index is available until after 1930.

Notable graves include Mr. James Carter, Sr., Augusta’s first Black dentist; Mr. R. A. Dent, first black from Augusta elected to the Legislature, Mr. Silas Floyd, minister and educator; Mrs. Amanda Dickson Toomer, richest black woman in the U.S. after the death of her father, David Dickson; and many others.

Paine College Department To Host First Annual Youth Summit

(Augusta, Ga) – The Paine College School of Professional Studies will host the inaugural Sankofa Youth Summit on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at 10:00 am in the Candler Memorial Library Ballroom. This event focuses on celebrating African and African American culture, history, and heritage.

The word Sankofa is derived from Akan tradition and translates in English as “go back to the past in order to build for the future.”  In the spirit of Sankofa, this youth summit will bring the richness, complexity, and the legacy of African American culture and heritage strength from the margins to the center.

The Sankofa Youth Summit targets youth between 12 and 17 years of age. The event will provide culturally enriching seminars focused on African and African American history, leadership skill training, and dialogue about community building.

Paine College Selected as Finalist for The Home Depot’s 2013 Retool Your School Program

(Augusta, Ga)– Paine College has been announced as a finalist in The Home Depot’s 2013 RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL campus improvement grant program. Designed to reinvigorate HBCUs, finalists are competing for $225,000 in grants for on-campus improvements and are now asking their communities and the public to help them win.  From February 18, 2013 to April 15, 2013, Paine College supporters can visit www.retoolyourschool.com to vote for Paine’s sustainable campus improvement project.  One $50,000 Tier 1 major grant, twelve Tier 2 $10,000 minor grants and one $25,000 Campus Pride for the school receiving the most online votes and social media activity, as assessed by The Home Depot, will be awarded. The Home Depot® will announce the winners on May 3, 2013.
 

To apply for the Retool Your School grants, HBCUs were required to submit Letters of Intent that included brief descriptions of their potential projects via the “Retool Your School” website by February 11, 2013.   Applicants that provided their Phase 1 proposals by the deadline were able to continue and submit full proposals for Tier I, Tier II and Campus Pride campus improvement grants.
 

“We are asking the CSRA community, Paine alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends throughout the country and abroad to cast a daily vote in support of Paine College by visiting www.retoolyourschool.com,” said Helene Carter, Assistant Vice President of Institutional Advancement.  “Paine’s projects are worthwhile and will make a difference on our campus.”

Paine College will face stiff competition from finalist schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.   Therefore, Paine supporters, alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends and family should log on and vote at www.retoolyourschool.com to ensure that the Lions bring home the grand prize.

During the online voting period that is currently underway, Paine College supporters are able to view descriptions of the College’s campus projects and can cast one vote per day for Paine.  Following the online vote, a panel of distinguished judges will also evaluate each school’s proposal. Tier I and Tier II projects will be judged based on the number of votes posted to the website, as well as the judges’ evaluation of the relevance to the proposal requirements as listed on the website and application. Entrants must highlight how each project will make a lasting, positive impact on their campus.  Special attention will be given to schools that pitch eco-friendly plans. The winning schools will be determined based on a combination of online votes and the judges’ evaluations. The awarding of the Campus Pride grant will be based on the number of votes and social media activity the winning school receives.
 

Some of the potential improvement projects entered by the HBCU finalists include projects that will affect the campus and community as a whole, such as installing eco-friendly bathrooms, adding wheelchair ramps and automatic access doors, creating sustainable landscaping projects, replacing windows with Energy Star rated fixtures, installing solar energy systems and motion sensors to reduce electric consumption in classrooms, starting community gardens and campus greenhouses to encourage healthy eating, and creating nature trails accessible to the surrounding community as a fit living initiative.  Each of the proposed improvement projects will enhance campus life for current students and generations to come.

Paine College Basketball to Host Benedict College For Senior Day

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Department of Athletics will honor senior basketball players during Senior Day, Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the HEAL Complex. The game which matches the Tigers of Benedict College against the Paine College Lions will serve as the final home basketball game for the 2012-2013 season.
The game tips-off at 1PM, as the Lady Lions and Lady Tigers take to the court. 
The seniors, Allen Young, Autis Gibson, Jared Moore, Kiara Farley, and Mario Jordan will be honored between the women’s and men’s game, and the Lions and Tigers will jump-ball immediately after the recognition.
 “Our senior student-athletes will perform in the final home game of their collegiate careers, so we just want to offer a small token of our appreciation for all of their hard work on and off the court” said Tim Duncan, Director of Athletics.
Tickets for contest are $10.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and youth, and Paine College students with valid I.D. free.
