The English and Foreign Languages program is dedicated to building not only an impeccable oral and written command of the English Language but also a humanistic appreciation of varied literary works. The English and Foreign Languages major exists to enhance students’ oral and written communication skills and to cultivate students’ knowledge and appreciation of literature. The professors in the department teach students to read thoughtfully, to analyze critically, and to logically express their ideas.

Through the study of literature, students gain insight into a vast range of experiences, thought processes, and feelings both similar to as well as different from their own. This process of study enables students to engage in both written and oral discourse on topical issues of culture, race, gender, and class.

The English and Foreign Languages program offers traditional and innovative courses to meet the needs of both English majors and non-majors.
