Admission Criteria
|
Students must successfully complete course work to receive degree credit for a specified
program of study. We strongly encourage students to seek advisement in the Division
of Education prior to applying.

Admission to Student Teaching

Admission to Teacher Education
To be admitted to Teacher Education students must complete the Teacher Education
Unit application and submit a folder containing artifacts to support meeting the
criteria listed below:
- Pass ENG 101 and 102 with a "C" or better
- Pass Common Curriculum mathematics course, MAT 122 or higher with a "C" or better
- Pass CSC 100, with a "C" or better
- Complete Common Curriculum, including PED
- Pass EDU 220 (Foundations of Education) with a "C" or better
- Pass the college-wide Sophomore Proficiency Examination in English (SPEE)
- Submit cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Pass the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) Basic Skills
Assessment (or provide written proof of exemption). Exemption requirement: SAT total
score 1000 (critical reading and mathematics), GRE total score 1030, or ACT total
score 43.
- Complete group interview with a rating of "Proficient"
- Submit clear background check (no criminal record or dishonorable discharge from
the armed services).
- Complete the Teacher Education Unit Application. Attach a copy of your autobiography
(must be at least 1 page, typed, and double spaced). Attach a copy of your Philosophy
of Education.
- Complete Personal Dispositions Matrix with a rating of "Acceptable"
Admission to Post–Baccalaureate Certification Areas
To be admitted to Post-Baccalaureate Certification Areas, the student must:
- Be admitted to Paine College
- Have earned a degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Attain a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher, or a 3.0 if graduate degree.
- Submit results of a Transcript Analysis*
- Submit a clear background check, including an FBI check. (no criminal record or
dishonorable discharge from the armed services)
- Complete a group interview with a rating of Proficient (i.e., interview focuses
on speaking ability, critical thinking, and receptivity to the conceptual framework).
- Pass the GACE Basic Skills Assessment,
or provide written proof of exemption. SAT
exemption: minimum combined verbal and mathematics score of 1000 GRE exemption:
minimum combined verbal and quantitative score of 1030 ACT exemption: minimum combined
English and mathematics score of 43
- Attach a copy of your autobiography (must be typed and double spaced).
- Attach copy of your Philosophy of Education.
- Complete Personal Dispositions Matrix at a rating of "Acceptable."
*There is a $25.00 fee for conducting the transcript analysis. Make your cashier
check or money order payable to the Division of Education. Write in the memo section
for "Transcript Analysis."

Admission to Student Teaching
Student Teaching is the capstone experience that provides opportunities for candidates
to apply theories in classroom settings. The candidates must:
- Submit an application for student teaching to the advisor one semester prior to
student teaching.
- Complete all pre-student teaching course requirements in the major field with a
grade of "C" or better and a GPA of 2.50 or better.
- Have at minimum a cumulative GPA of 2.50.
- Submit a clear background check, including an FBI check.
- Submit personal/professional dispositions matrices at a rating of "Acceptable."
- Provide proof of membership in a professional education organization (e.g., GAE-SP).
- Provide a passing score on the GACE II Test of Content Knowledge Examination in
their area of preparation, or on the state required licensure test.
